Can I reclaim fees/retract feedback after promising buyer a full refund?

Hi Guys, I wonder if you could help a newbie ebay seller and also my first post on this fantastic forum. I have just sold an item of clothing on Ebay to a buyer who has since claimed it makes her look "stupid" as it is too big despite it being labled the correct size. In an act of good faith I have offered her a full refund if the item is returned to me in it's original condition i.e. unworn and labels not removed. I haven't received it yet. However I am wondering if I have been too hasty in offering a full refund of the entire winning bid (inc. P+P) as I feel it is a case of her just changing her mind and saying it doesn't fit to bully me into it as I don't want a neg so soon! I have also left positive feedback as I thought the transaction was completed. What options do I have in claiming back at least my fees. I know I can't retract the feedback, but getting the fees back would make me feel better!

Once its returned to you,you can then
    refund the bidder,the post & P&P
but not the cost she has incurred
    sending it back to you.

If she decides she is going to
make a claim against you via
    ebay/paypal she
will be expected to do the above
and will not be able to claim
    the postage back to you.

You should be able to claim your fees back
    under the mutual agreement.

You perhaps could have said you will
accept a retun minus postal costs
in the begining but its too late for that
you have made an arrangement and will
    have to stick with it.

Just chalk it up to experience and
move on from it if you are listing
clothes on your listing you could have
just under the title you could have
    as an example

    Ladies t shirt top

    UK size 12

These are the exact measurements of this top
please read them carefuly to be sure of a good fit

Measuring accross the front from just under the arms
this top is 18 inches wide,36 inches in total.
From the back of the neck to the bottom hemline this
top it 25 inches in length.

If you have this on your clothes listings
each time you only need to change size
    type eg - t shirt,blouse,shirt etc
measure the item as per the description
    and change the numbers,also always
put in UK size as you get overseas bidders
getting confused, but the idea is that the
measurements are clearly laid out and they
can compare them to a top they already own
with the above on your listing you can avoid
your current situation or similar ones as it
is clearly stated how big the item is and both
ebay and paypal will come out on your side
    because its there.

Should also add that on the few ocassions
that anyone wanted to return something
the words with tags still attached in the
condition sent makes most back off.You
may be lucky and never hear from this
    bidder again.

Also as the seller never leave any feedback until the
bidder has left theirs I learned this the hard way my self.

Good luck I hope it all ends OK for you

  • :A Thanks Rosekitten for the helpful advice re listing clothing as you say I have a feeling that I won't see this item again and if I do I think I will just put this one down to experience and let it go and move on. Thanks again - it's a jungle out there!
  • Hi Further to my earlier posting I have received the garment back from the buyer and I am about to issue a refund as agreed. However upon returning the garment to me she sent me a message saying "item sent cost £1.52". This is despite me saying I would not pay the cost of returning the garment to me. Shall I just ignore her comment and go ahead and issue the refund as agreed. The bottom line here is I don't want a neg as I have just started out selling on Ebay and now have alot of positives and would be gutted to get a neg. If she did neg me can I get Ebay to retract it given that I have left her a positive and refunded her. If I did have to pay her return costs to secure a positive can I reclaim my fees back from Ebay? Sorry to warble on over £1.52 but it is the principle and she has been really aggressive.

You aren't obliged to refund her return postage... you're doing her a favour even accepting the return at all if it was accurately described.

That's the situation, however the bottom line is:

Do you feel strongly enough about preventing a neg to refund her the extra?
If you did it, you might still get a neg!

Ebay will not retract the neg if she leaves one, unless it breaks their feedback guidelines.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

Unfortunately the buyer has a slight upperhand as you have already left feedback. And even sadder is the fact that this is the way it will be for all sellers once we cannot leave neg feedback for buyers!

It made me laugh:rotfl: when you said
"buyer who has since claimed it makes her look "stupid""
    Is that your fault???
Maybe she just looks stupid anyway!

you have done her a favour accepting a return as you did not have to.

you should just refund the item cost only.

don't refund the original postage or the return postage (what a cheek!)

If she does leave neg, are you able to leave a reply underneath? I recently had a neutral from someone who claimed it took 9 days to receive an item (it took 3 business days). She paid Sat pm and I posted second class on the Tues and she received Friday am.

With the forthcoming feedback changes, negs will be a fact of life for most sellers, even those who try their hardest to satisfy buyers....

Thanks for all the replies I have gone ahead and refunded her and tried to refund the return costs as well but paypal wouldn't let me add them on! I am just putting this one down to experience as it was my first garment sale and moving on! I have had some great feedback since so I have my faith restored a little! so go ahead a neg me!

As regards the item making her look stupid (yep it tickled me too) maybe I have discovered a niche market!

    lol:rotfl:
