Hi,
I never seem to have a problem with pearl barley in my slow cooker but all you need to do is soak the barley in cold water for a few hours or overnight is even better. Hope this helps.0 -
I used pearl barley on my first slow cooker chicken stew last week and although I rinsed it really well, I didn't soak it. Cooked the stew on high for about 8 hours and the pearl barley was lovely.0

I made soup in the slow-cooker yesterday with pearl barley. I didn't rinse or soak; it just went straight in from the packet. About 4-5 hours on high. If anything, it was a bit too soft, without any chew at all. I used Sainsbury's own brand of barley, if that makes any differenceLove and compassion to all x0

Bought some pearl barley as it caught my eye whilst out shopping.
May sound a bit dumb but, any ideas as to what to do with it?
Regards

Fling a handful into a soup, stew or casserole and 'enjoy'.
I'm not a fan. Unfortunately my mum is and as there have been times when she's been in charge of the Vallikids they too have been introduced to the delights of pearl barley.

Thank you Honey Bear0 -
It can be substituted for rice in most recipes. For timings, think of it as wholemeal rice.
This site gives a good basic introduction

I love the texture of pearl barley. I made a really nice tomato a d pearl barley soup. The downside is it takes a while to cook, so if I'm in a hurry I use ebly.

Another vote for Scotch Broth. And Thanks, if the button was there. If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?
