  • Hi,
I never seem to have a problem with pearl barley in my slow cooker but all you need to do is soak the barley in cold water for a few hours or overnight is even better. Hope this helps.

I used pearl barley on my first slow cooker chicken stew last week and although I rinsed it really well, I didn't soak it. Cooked the stew on high for about 8 hours and the pearl barley was lovely.

I made soup in the slow-cooker yesterday with pearl barley. I didn't rinse or soak; it just went straight in from the packet. About 4-5 hours on high. If anything, it was a bit too soft, without any chew at all. I used Sainsbury's own brand of barley, if that makes any difference :)

  • Bought some pearl barley as it caught my eye whilst out shopping.

May sound a bit dumb but, any ideas as to what to do with it?

    Regards

Fling a handful into a soup, stew or casserole and 'enjoy'.

I'm not a fan. Unfortunately my mum is and as there have been times when she's been in charge of the Vallikids they too have been introduced to the delights of pearl barley.

I add it to my HM soups ;)

It can be substituted for rice in most recipes. For timings, think of it as wholemeal rice.

I love the texture of pearl barley. I made a really nice tomato a d pearl barley soup. The downside is it takes a while to cook, so if I'm in a hurry I use ebly.
Its not bad as a risotto

I've cooked and frozen pearl barley all by itself in the past. Then just grab a handful from the freezer and toss it into whatever I'm making.

No, theres no need, just put them in your stew when you start the cooking, they'll be fine
I found the same in a slow cooker. They only need time to soak up the water.

    Scotch broth...my favourite.

Another vote for Scotch Broth. And Thanks, if the button was there.
