    12 hours a week @ £5 an hour = £1920pa

What is your tax code? 522L?

If so no you shouldn't, bring it up with your employer and they should sort it out. When you are earning over £5220 (if your tax code is 522) you will start paying tax.

No tax on that amount unless you have another job earlier in the year that used up your allowance. Does your employer have the correct code number for you?

Also don't worry tooooo much about the tax issue, you can claim it back after the tax year has ended (April 5th), just hassle your employer for your P60 (End of Year Certificate), fill in a few forms with the tax people and they will send you a cheque. Just a warning, it can take a while.

    Hi,

I am also a student working 15 hours a week with the tax code 522L. Now I have been told that full-time students dont get taxed but my question is should we be paying National Insurance? As they just started deducting this from me 2 months ago when I turned 18.
Sorry if its a dumb question its just that I have asked different people - a fellow student who works with me and says we shouldnt have to pay NI as he didnt and the Personnel office who say we do? Naturally I'm confused! Any clarification would be great!
