:( Hi

I received a letter today stating that i had taken out a loan for £500 from mem consumer finance limited (Loan company), which i did not.

I phoned them up and told them i did not take out a loan and he confirmed my name address which was correct, but my date of birth did not match and he said if i had a halifax bank account which i did not.

He told me i am victim of ID theft and i will need to contact their fraud team on monday.

Please could someone give me some advise.

I cant believe this is happening to me. I think this is down to the child benefit data being lost, as my child was receiving this.

Not neccessarily. They could have gotten your info from somewhere else. If you have not yet done so pull a free credit report online for yourself and any partner living with you. check it well.

Also check your last few credit card bills and your bank account statements.

Hope you have a shredder at home!

Sorry you've got a problem but ..that's rubbish. The lost data was more accurate than your fraudsters have used!

Just opened it, they tried to call me today as well.

Tried to call them back but no one there on Sundays. It seems they are one of those cheque cashing/short term loan companies.

Never had any dealings with them and never would.

Will phone them up monday morning...

Looking at their website, they don't check credit reports. If they had, they would notice that there is a CIFAS entry against my address saying I've been a victim of fraud.

Why don't some of these companies do proper checks??????
  • I've just received a letter from MEM Finance also telling me I owe money on a loan I never took out - I've never heard of this company before today.

How did you get on with them once you got in contact? Were they helpful and did they accept you didn't owe them money?
  • Im positive this is a con and they were on watch dog a few weeks ago, they some how get your details and make up debts and say u took a loan like 4 years ago and never paid it.

I cant recall if that was the name of the company but you need to find the date which the loan/amount was "given" to you, then contact cab or watch dog, im sure they had a number at the end of the show for these someone who can help you.

It took a long time but...

Not long after my previous post, they accepted it wasnt me.

Earlier this year, they passed on my details to a s*um bag collections agency. At this point I contacted the Fiunancial Services Ombudsman, who lodged a complaint on my behalf. I got an apology not long after that.

The important thing is to always contact them after every letter they send you, deny everything and try to turn it into a complaint.

They have several different personas as well. You can also look them up at http://www.monthendmoney.co.uk/ where they have better information on how to complain.

    Good Luck

Not very good ID theft, they got 2 out of 3 things wrong!!
  • Help me please, I've also received a letter from this company called MEM Consumer Finance Ltd. The letter says that I had a loan with them and I've missed a loan payment and the loan is now overdue and that I can make a payment directly into there bank account (End Month Money Ltd).

What loan? I've never had a loan from this company. In fact I've never had a loan from any company EVER in my life (except my credit card I suppose).

I've also noticed that they have made a mistake with my surname. Lets say for example my surname was Gibsons, well they have put Gibson (missing the last letter S). But they have my first name and address correct.

I opened the letter expecting junk mail because of this mistake and it took a few seconds to understand what I was reading then I panicked, I've checked my current account and savings account online and nothing is wrong, no moneys have been paid in or out that should'nt have been. I've also checked my credit score with experian.co.uk last night and everything is normal.

I've always guarded my ID well to the extent that my parents say I'm paranoid about it, my computer is always upto date with virus\spyware scanners, I never read or reply to emails that I'm not expecting (i.e. I consider everything to be spam) always shred paperwork etc.

I'm worried that balifs are going to come round to take stuff and I dont need this stress. How do I defend myself against this.I don't know what to do, who do I phone\talk to?. If I call this company MEM what do I say?. Please guys any help at all would be appreciated.

    don't Worry.

Make sure you contact them staight away and deny the loan. As I said above, don't worry about complainting.

Also, check you credit report with Experian and Equifax. there may be other dubious goings on under your name.

Keep a note of each and every time you contact them and ask them for proof that it is you.

this company does not do proper cedit checks before lending money, so they have not followed proper KYC (Know Your Customer) principles. So THEY take the credit risk of fraudulant loans.

Make sure you do not ignore any correspondence from them. If they do ty to bother you, write a letter to their Executive Complaints Depatment. If they don't respond, complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).

    Good Luck
