Yes, borrow that combi machine.
You could just record only the parts of the tape that you need onto a DVD disc.
Otherwise, as you say, record the tape onto a DVD-RW disc.
Then finalize it!
Then 'rip' the RW disc onto your hard drive as a file.
Then edit the file.
Then author it as a DVD and burn it to a DVD+/-R disc.
It sounds like one hell of a job.
But if the VHS tapes are your wedding videos etc, or if they're movies that aren't released on DVD, then I suppose it's worth it.

i think this is definitely an over night job,,,
few personnel videos and kids playing football final with me ranting(manager) on side line.and few old films ie 1st star wars before everyone messed with it eth
