Amex Cash Back

Options
I have never had a credit card before so excuse me for some probably obvious questions.

I am thinking of getting the American Express cash back card. I understand that you can set it up so that you pay off the balance by DD at the end of each month. How do you do this? Is it on their application form?

1. Will I be charged anything at all if I always pay the card off in full each month? (ie fees charges insurance etc)

2. When is the cashback given back to me? Monthly anuually etc? and how?

3. I understand that some places charge a transaction fee. Is this only during the booking of tickets etc or do some shops do it as well? If so do they have to tell you when you buy something or will it just be added to my bill.

I am basically just wanting to swap my switch card for this cash back card and use it as if it were a debit card but just get a bit of cash back.

Apart from always paying the full amount off are there any other snags to watch out for with this card.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Hi Rob

My experience has been that you have to phone them once you get your card to set up the DD but that it is a straightforward process from there. And actually the people on the phone were very nice. They also use this phone call to sort out your credit limit I think?

If you pay the card off in full there are no charges.

The cashback comes annually as I understand it anyway, not sure how though  haven't been at this point yet but I have faith that it will be in a way I can use

I've not had any issues with a transaction fee for any of my normal spending - all of the supermarkets seem happy with amex as do most other chain stores. As far as I've found it they either take AMEX or they don't, no one has charged me any extra (in face to face transactions anyway). Others may have different experiences on this. Yes I've been charged a flat fee for flights etc but no different than any other credit card.

If there are other snags I want to know about them too, so far I haven't found any :)

**edit** I know it might be obvious but if you have any big buys coming up make sure that you get the card at a time to take advantage of it. EG I got mine in Jan cos I know we're going to upgrade the computer in the next couple of months...I'm also trying to book any holiday flights etc for the next little while...

Hi there..I've just got one of these cards.
(1)no you won't be charged anything at all if you pay it off in full
(2)cashback is given as a credit on your bill in the 13th month
(3)shopping in tescos etc doesn't usually charge a CC fee...holiday companies and ticket places sometimes charge but will tell you. They will tell you the total of the transaction at the place.
Some places don't take AMEX so best to check
