Cost of fitting a kitchen (merged threads)

We have a small "corridor-style" kitchen. Despite it being very small, it still has plenty of cupboards.

We have been getting prices for replacing the early 80s kitchen which is now in a terrible state (ie. cabinets and worktops giving way).

We have got a price of £2,000 which we are ok with for the parts ie. cabinets (14 in total including both wall and floor), worktops, sink, electric oven and electric hob (to replace existing free-standing electric cooker), lights, infills/plinths/pelmets/cornices etc. We are re-using our existing washing machine and fridge/freezer (not integrated).

Unfortunately we don't have the skill to fit it ourselves.

This is what we have been quoted for fitting from the supplier's fitter:

Dry fit £1,200
Plumbing (sink and washing machine position swapping though they are already next to each other) and electrics (lighting and moving 2 sockets and lightswitch and running new cable with outlets/switches for new appliances from fuseboard unit in kitchen because the fitter says he won't add to existing ring main under part P) £600
Replace fuseboard with modern split consumer unit for RCD protection £330.

Does this seem the going rate? We are trying to get other quotes at the moment to see how reasonable this is. Since we then have to deal with the supply/fitting of wall tiles and replacement of floor, this is all getting very expensive for us so we might have to postpone it if this is the going rate - especially since having a new consumer unit may bring to light other existing electrical wiring problems which don't affect the old fusebox.

I can't comment on the price for the electical work but my daughter has just had a price for fitting kitchen units (Howdens trade price £1700) and that was £750 and included replastering the ceiling and doing the plumbing. So I think you should be looking around for a lower estimate for the actual dry fitting.
It may depend on where you live to some extent, the above quote was for the Bishop Auckland area.

Thanks Ted. I'm in South Wales. I know it's very difficult to judge electrics without seeing them. I think perhaps some savings could be made there but maybe not too much. It's awkward because a part P registered fitter can only do certain things but if I get an electrician instead, the fitter won't do any electrics and would want the electrician to come back to complete.

As you said, I'm hoping I can get the dry fit cheaper. The fitter reckoned it would be 3 days work including the electrics. My parents paid considerably less than our dry fit price a couple of years ago for a similar sized dry fit & the plumbing of appliances into existing pipework.

    Hi Santana
I'm in South Wales and the builder/tradesman I use does excellent work and is very cheap. If you want I can PM you his number. Why not get him to quote on the job that way you can see if you are getting ripped off.

What a shame it's not Leicester-Just had my kitchen done. He fitted cupboard fronts, put a new back door on and frame, fitted 4 bedroom doors, handles and locks, fitted a sink, 2 work surfaces, made shelves in my pantry, made a shelf for my microwave, new doorknob on living room door,he also fitted 12 small blinds on my bay windows. He even went to B+Q for me because I don't have a car.

    Total cost? £415

If anyone needs anything doing I can give you his details, he's a carpenter by trade, got made redundant and started out on his own 7 months ago-he is spot on.

Hi Sharon. Yes please PM me the number. My wife has phoned one other recommended local person today to get a rough idea and if reasonable to come round to give a formal quote. It would be worth asking your guy as well.
  • £1200 dry fit is about right from a large superstore.

Usually the rule is that if you are around 500mm from plumbing there is no charge? Not adding to an existing ring because of part P sounds very odd. If there is a problem with existing electrics they must be fixed not worked around. I haven't seen it so i'll shut up now!

If someone charges more than £200 to change a fuse board they should be shot!!!!!!

£55-70 ish for board inc mcb's. Then a couple of hours work!

    Thanks Uncle Bulgaria.

I'm not aware of any electrical problems in the kitchen (or anywhere else in the house). The fitter said he couldn't add to anything to the existing ring but could move/remove existing items (but in the case of the new appliances, he would only connect them to his new wiring). We're probably within 500mm for plumbing.

Hope to get prices from a couple of others and see how they compare. I think the "large superstore" business is the problem since the dry fit is the fitter's charge plus the store's overhead/mark-up.
  • If there are no problems then there should be no reason why he can't add sockets to an existing ring main. If however he is not part P registered then he is not allowed to add new sockets. He is also not allowed to move sockets or put any new cabling in a kitchen. Alarm bells are ringing. Get the electrician to give a quote. Make sure you get your part P certificate at the end.

Did you know that a large store with 3 initials makes on average £650 on a customer that has their fit? And another with 2 initials seperated by '&' makes even more!

    Mentioning no names............. :shhh:
  • I am currently (slowly) fitting my own kitchen, the only work im having done is the GAS hob fitting and the guy qouted me £65 to move it .... inc chasing the wall out and dropping it about 1 foot.

Not bad me thinks ............ but i wish i knew a few good trades men in my area.

Trying to find a plaster is a nightmare.
  • I've just bought a kitchen and was wondering what the likely cost of having it fitted will be. My kitchen is about 3 metres long by 2 metres wide. I have having cupboards and wall cupboards all down one side and a breakfast bar on the otherside. The plumbing is already for the sink and washing machine so does anyone know what it would be likely to cost me if I have someone to fit it?
