    Hi Darryl,

Can you tell me what company you have your Home Emergency insurance with.

I'm trying to decide whether to get BG 3* cover or a Home emergency cover.

My boiler is about 20 years old and I'm petrified of being landed with a huge bill for any breakdowns or being left with no heating over the Holiday period.

Did you find the responses to your emergencies rapid?

    Thanks,
    Temin

I accept that in strict economic terms it probably would pay to adopt a 'Fix when broken' policy and I don't suscribe to any form of appliance insurance except Central Heating

However IMO the peace of mind I get with BG 3* servicing makes their charges a bargain.

I have been caught with huge bills in the past and that was before plumbers joined the ranks of the super-rich.

Bear in mind that the BG 3* cover is NOT an insurance policy against boiler breakdown, or a boiler warranty.

If it packs in and cannot be economically repaired (or they pretend they cannot get the parts) then they'll encourage you to have it replaced ... entirely at your own cost and at an inflated price.

My wife has convinced me to sign up for nationwide gas cover, which i have now done.

It is £11.99 a month  and i plan to use it through the winter ( i know a cold spell is predicted!) and if i can, cancel it in Spring.

I am due to receive a pack of info in the post soon and will let you others know, if interested.

    Yes please.
I should also get a free service and safety check within 28 days. This is all new to me and i am very curious to see what the 'free service' actually consists of!

What happened - how quickly after sign-up did you get your service?

I'm looking at either this Nationwide cover, or Powergen, or BG - but I definitely want the service and some repairs before Christmas.

I have also got the BG cover and quite happy with it, things have gone wrong with my boiler and have been replaced, a fan was replaced and i costed the part at £230 quid, also problems with the pilot light, ignition system replaced..i cetainly have had my moneys worth, i have been with them for two years, when the first fault happened the engineer tried the " "you need a new boiler" trick but i rang BG for a second opinion and have another engineer to come out, he spotted the fault and fixed it, the part was a thermocoupler which costs pence to buy, always get a second opinion.

Don't you think that it disgraceful of them to try it on with 'you need a new boiler' and then fix the problem later?!!

    Did they offer any apologies?
Thats exactly the reason why i don't want to use them. I can't trust them! What if i was desperate and didn't know any better?

I do not know wether or not it was a sales pitch or he did not know how to fix the fault, probably the latter, like you say no apologies but these companies treat you like a cash cow so you just turn the table on them and squeeze every bit out of them like i did, the dark side is i could of been a little old lady who would have taken his advice and parted with a lot of hard earned cash...disgraceful really, but can you honestly name any company this day and age that does not want to rip you off, my philosophy is i have bolier cover with BG and you will fix it whatever it takes!. :-/
  • http://www.midkentwater.co.uk/eshop/HS%20Insurance/gas%20boiler%20emergency.htm this one is only £7.99 a month, has anyone used them????

http://www.servowarm.co.uk/insurance.htm Servowarm is £96 a year, no one seen this???

I personally just want the boiler covered, nothing else as I have a friend who is a plumber but just doesn't do boilers.

So I only want boiler cover, the MidKent seems a good one, has anyone got any other ones like this?

I agree strongly with the guy who said you pay £100K for a house and pay £200 to insure it, you pay £1000K for a boiler and pay £150 to insure it!!! Crazy  ???
    Nice to save.

    Oh my goodness!

I misread your post the first time - I thought an independent said you needed a new boiler, but BG came and fixed it in a trice.

That is COMPLETELY despicable and exactly what I would expect from BG :(

And you STILL pay for the cover from a firm that has a policy of ripping off its customers?

It's crazy, but what's even more crazy is to pay £150 for something which isn't even insurance - just some vague suggestion that they might try to mend it, but if they can't/can't be bothered, they don't have to! Big wow!
