auto renewing domain name?

ive just had money come out of my bank account from 1&1 who i registered a domain name with 2 years ago.

it seems like i cant do anything to get a refund. all i can do is cancel the contract so it wont happen again.

has anyone else had this problem? i'm really not happy that they can just charge my account without asking me or warning me its coming up for renewal.

Did it not say it would autorenew when you signed up?
  • not that i can remember. it was 2 years ago now.
its obviously something which they dont make clear in order to get extra money from people.
another thing with it, theyve taken the money from my account but they have an erraneous first and last name on my customer details (the domain name) instead of my actual name. so should the money have come out with the wrong account holder name?

If I was buying anything, firstly I'd never buy using a debit card online, nor via DD bank details, always only by credit card.

Secondly always make sure you haven't opted into auto-renew, I'm pretty sure you have to be asked to agree to this. None of my domains (50+) with 123-reg auto-renew, I get reminders and it's up to me, although I can set an auto-renew on a credit-card - however they have to let you know 30 days before that they will renew it and then take the money. (Same with DD).

If there is an erroneous name on the transaction, I'd chase it up with one-and-one and the bank immediately.
  • well i am in the middle of sorting out my finances, trying to keep everything simple. from now on i am going to make purchases on a credit card and pay the balance in full each month. my bank account will just be there for my pay to come in and dd's to go out (mortgage, bills).
any shopping (food, fuel, clothes) will go on the cc.
i just worry that there might be other things that have my details stored and could take money out without notice. really annoys me these things that can just auto renew without your authorisation.

If you do sign up for anything else, be aware that cancelling a continous authority on a credit / debit card can be very akward or even impossible if the retailer does not oblige

DD is the safest way, at least your bank will follow your instructions and cancel, continuous credit card or debit card authority requires the retailer to cancel, a phone call or instruction the the card company by you will not stop it
