When to arrange Buildngs Insurance when buying a house

I'm in the middle of purchasing a house, we have exchanged and will be given 9 days notice for completion. We are currently renting and have contents insurance already.
I need to get buildings insurance for the new house as the mortgage offer states it, but I don't really know when I should start to arrange it as they all ask for a start date when getting quotes. I'm feeling a bit lost about when to do this, as my current insurers told me I can't even get a quote with them until I complete, which will be too late for my mortgage offer to go through. I've actually decided that I would start a fresh and get my buildings and contents together for the new house and then cancel my current contents insurance once we have moved out (doesn't run out till 1/1/09) and thought that this might make things easier for renewal and cheaper.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
