NTL Cable Box

At my previous house we had Cable tv from NTL. When I left two years ago I asked them to collect the box but they never did. Clearly they aren't going to now.

I now live in an area where cable is not available so my question is does the box have any use or do I just bin it?

Thanks

We have the same problem, however we were with NTL at our previous address and took the box with us to our new address, where we are unable to get NTL/virgin so we cancelled our subscription and they have never come to pick up the box.

We are now moving again and don't want to take it with us again so what to do?
    Freecycle?
    Recycle - where?
    Or just bin it?

Unless you want to keep anything for spares (eg. cables) take the box to your local recycling centre - they'll be dealt with there. Otherwise, yeah - just bin them, or pass them onto someone who's still with Virgin/NTL for them to keep hold of.
Where there's a will, there's a way to get something cheaper from somewhere else!! :D

Just ebay it someone will want it.
Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives.:j

You may all wish to get in touch with NTL and give them their equipment back, there's lots of tales on www.nthellworld.co.uk or http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/56/ who have letters from NTL\Virginmedia as they are now demanding payment of some £300 for the return of their equipment, be sure to get a signed receipt for it too. Or maybe seek advice from those on nthellworld.co.uk who will be able to assist in giving virgin their equipment back.

That is unless you can stand getting a demmand for payment for losing virginmedia's equipment, which usually seems to come as a suprise to most people considering they gave their boxes back to ntl\virgin without getting a receipt.

Also, someone will want it on ebay, freecycle as they'll use it to get back onto the network, funny thing is they may end up using your account details which may or may not have been shutdown\out of the network. It's not been unknown for people to get bills from NTL\Virgin months\years afterwards saying they owe money, they say no they didn't, then it comes out they gave their box away and someone used it .... your choice.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Well for what it's worth I have just rung Virgin (who bought out NTL) and was told to
"dispose of my box and cable modem in an environmentally friendly manner"
guess its going on freecycle then.....

Your choice, and though I realise it's not the same thing as giving your box away but this guy: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/11/33648896-stolen-virgin-tv-box.html had his box stolen. He told virgin who say it's his responsibility to look after the box and if not then he has to pay for it. Lots of 'well I gave mine to freecycle, will be be charged - general answer: yes'. Go see for yourselves.

If you want rid of it, then send it back to virgin using one of their sae's as this guy suggests: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/34811276-post52.html

Or not, in which case when they realise you have some of their equipment and they send you a bill. Good luck proving you did or did not give it back.
