Fanbelt problem
I've been driving for a couple of years but know nothing about the working of an engine....so all help appreciated.
Everytime I start my 1990 VW Golf up, the fanbelt makes an excruciating screeching noise, this usually lasts until I get out of first gear. I'm presuming the belt is loose or worn down.
I'm going to take it to a garage tomorrow and don't wish to be ripped off, my question is roughly how much would I expect to pay to have a fanbelt changed and do different car models use different belts?
Many Thanks

It sounds like the alternator belt, it may just need tightening up which is a 5 minute job so should cost too much or it may need replacing. A new belt for a golf is not expensive - up to a tenner at most and then maybe 20 minutes for fitting.0

If its squealing it is either loose - tighten it up might only delay this happening again though or is old and past it's useful life.
I had mine changed the other day, the belt was about £8 and it took about 10 minutes to change it. Therefore I'd say no more than £30 to £40 max to have it done inc. the price of the belt.Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

This is the MSE forum, so you won't be surprised if I suggest that you can do this yourself, and save the £30 you might be charged. Yes you will need some tools, but a cheap Chinese socket set can be had for less than a tenner and they will be perfectly adequate for the job. Chances are there will be one clamp bolt that needs to be loosened, and one bolt that needs to be adjusted to tighten the belt. If you are determined to pay someone else to do the work, at least ask them to show you what needs to be done so you can do it yourself next time.0
