Does anyone work for HSBC?

Hey

I have just been offered a position with HSBC and i've just spoken to a wonderful lady who is now doing my checks.

Has anyone worked for HSBC or is anyone working for them. I am looking to settle now, I have just left a position with Barclays, that I was really uncomfortable in because it was selling on the phones. I love branch work and that's what i'm going back to, it would be interesting to see and hear opinions from people about what working life is like within HSBC-I am very confident that I am going to be extremely happy and i'm excited but I just wanna get in and start now but my checks will take 4 weeks so don't start until 31st-i'll stop rambling now anyway.

So, is there anyone out there?

I used to work for them - really don't rate them as an employer at all - I'd seriously recommend you get signed up with Amicus in case you need their assistance at a later date.

  • I think all banks are the same nowadays - sales, sales, and then more sales.
When you get your target don't expect a thank you, just why haven't you done more!
  • I have just resigned from Natwest after working there for over 25 years, the sales pressure and staff shortages had just become ridiculous. I think that all banks are the same these days. I would think long and hard about it, I think that selling face to face is worse than selling on the phones, especially when you have to ask the regular customers the same questions week after week.

Mind you,I admire your enthusiasm, have you worked in a branch before, and if so how long ago?

Have you thought about a building society?

They seem much more relaxed rather than the bank's I've used. That's just my impression from the outside, they do sell things, but its not so in your face.

I've just started working for HSBC recently, and I have to say that so far I have no problems whatsoever with what I've seen. Customer service seems to be the absolute bottom line, with bonus contributions being removed if a customer is sold a product and then later decides that actually it's just not suitable for them. Apparently they tried the "hard sell at all costs" approach a few years back and decided that it didn't fit.

I've sat in on a fair few customer interviews, and am happy to say that so far I haven't seen anyone trying to push a customer into getting something they don't actually need or couldn't benefit from.

Obviously I can't comment on whether this standard applies to branches other than my own, but I believe that they have their goals set up to make sure that customers are treated as they should be.

As for working conditions... So far I've had my training outlined for the first several months, have been given access to the various online learning resources, have courses booked for me, am shadowing the experienced employees, etc, and overall feel that I'm getting a very good introduction to the bank.

If other haven't had the same experience as me, then it shows that (as with any employer) there are good roles/places to work and there are not so good places all within the same organisation.

I wish you the best with starting your new job, and would strongly advise you to do what you feel is best. If you come to a point where the role doesn't fit any more, either ask for a role change or look elsewhere. There's no sense in working somewhere that you hate!

Feel free to PM me with any more specific questions, as that might be more appropriate for the sake of our own anonymity ;)

Oh dear-i'm sorry to hear that. I am with Amicus as a rule of thumb anyway as they are always there to help with things but it's shame you didn't have a nice experience, what happened to you?

    Hey Amanda

Funny u should say about Natwest. I worked for them when I was 17 and my Mum was very very poorly and I couldn't juggle work and caring for her (as she lived 60 miles away from where I worked in branch) so I left too as we were very short staffed and half our team got shipped out to ither branches even though we were very good performers, but I didn't want my personal life to get in the way, but i've had 2 years of life 'clean up' since then and luckily I have my life back on track and i'm settling into my career.
Are you planning on joining another bank then?
