Switching From British Gas When Still In Credit
I'm looking to switch from British Gas as I am not happy with their level of service.
They have been overcharging me, so I am currently about £60 in credit for gas and £50 in credit for electricity. If I switch will I automatically get this money back?
Every website tells me to switch, but none mention this.
Thanks
Neil

Hi a friend was in exactly that position, with british gas. they would not refund the overpayment so he switched and they refunded his credit straight away.
Hope this helpsI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
They will just work out your final bill, pay for it with the credit you had in your account and then return any monies owed to you.0

Thats good to hear, thanks Lazydaisy and mprice, we are also in a similar position (currently £120 in credit with BG) and have just switched to Eon, who we are going to be paying £10 a month less to than BG
That £120 will certainly come in useful:T0 -
How long does the refund process normally take? We switched from British Gas who supplied both our Gas & Electricity a month ago & although they've had final meter readings we've yet to receive a final bill which makes me think they probably owe us money as I'm pretty sure they wouldn't drag their feet sendin a bill if we owed them?0

I'd expext that final statement anyday now.
If you are unsure/worried/want to chase - give them a call to check nothing has gone wrong.
If you were paying by DD and didn't cancel it they should be able to put the credit straight back into your account.0 -

Still no final bill! So I'm going to assume they owe me! :think:0 -
The system is all automated, so as long as all the messages from the various companies come in, the final bill/statement will be generated and any refund issued automatically.
Being in credit will not affect this - computers don't care.0
