Is is worth protecting my no claims bonus?

It's time to renew my car insurance and as I've accumulated 6 years of no claims bonus, I was wondering, it it worth paying the extra to protect this?

I'm not really sure of how it works and whether it is worth paying the extra for.

Thanks:smiley:

If you make a claim your bonus won't drop at renewal.

So it's worth it if you claim and not if you don't.

Just like taking a large excess is worth it if you don't make a claim, but not worth it if you do have to claim.

Only you know if paying the extra is worth the peace of mind it will give you.

However they word it, if you make a claim you will pay more at renewal, and you will have paid an extra premium to "protect" your NCB, personally I won't pay it, a lot of companies want you to pay extra these days, extended warranties etc, they just want more money from you and don't care how they get it

You're renewal with existing co will most likely go up but that doesn't stop you from shopping around. After my 100% fault claim in 2006 our renewal went up but we shopped around and paid less after the claim than we did before.
Hubby always pays to protect it. With so many cars on the roads these days we believe its worth having.

Agreed, but I don't think another ins comp has to honour the NCB if you have claimed, even with NCB protection?
You can and should shop around at renewal as a matter of course, NCB protection is just,in my opinion, another unnecessary add on.

None of the co's I called for a quote questioned the NCB when I detailed the claim to them. They just said the usual thing about if you take out the policy then proof of NCB will need to be sent to us.
We have changed co's twice since the claim and its never been in doubt we still have full NCB protected.

I think what you are thinking about is if a claim is still on-going and you change co's. They won't honour your NCB until the claim is sorted and NCB is re-instated by your previous ins co. I'm not even sure if you can change co's while a claim is ongoing
