If the machine is under warranty, it will spell out what you can expect from IBM, i.e. whether or not you will be able to get a replacement unit. Any work carried out will need to be done in accordance with the Supply of Goods & Services Act, in the main with reasonable care and skill and as quoted.
How old is the machine? You would have rights against the retailer for faulty goods for a limited time after purchase. Seeking a replacement is an option.
However as you've gone down the warranty route, the retailer can't take responsibilty for something that IBM have or haven't done. It'll be 2 different contacts.
You mentioned IBM has sold the PC dept to Lenovo. This means very little to me, but as it sounds like a seperate company it and might be worth checking whether Lenovo took on the liabilities for machines under IBM's 'old' warranties.
If Lenovo has no liability to the warranty, you can't enforce anything against IBM as isn't their responsibilty either.
Might be worth writing to IBM/Lenovo to find out who exactly is responsible for the warranty.
If one of the 2 parties is liable for the non-peformance of repair works under the Supply of Goods and services act, you'd be looking to be compensated for money wasted, e.g. couriers, fees and cost to be repaired by someone else, IBM authorised?
Hope this makes sense.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0
