installing windows 98 on an xp pc

my pc has two partitions, a c: drive and a d: drive, can anyone tell me how I can install windows 98 on the d: drive without formatting my hard drive, as when I run the setup disk it tries to overwrite everything on the c: drive which has all my files and xp operating system on. thanks

if you have 2 seperate hard drives, just unplug the XP drive first.

If you have 2 seperate partitions on 1 hard drive, you will have issues, because win98 is a much more basic OS, and it's boot script won't be able to recognise XP, so Micro$oft recommend installing in order of OS age.

Not sure that it's possible, unless c: and d: are two physically separate drives You usually have to install the earlier OS first I'm afraid. You might want to look at creating a virtual PC inside XP

Check out http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx. Once installed all you need to do is create a new virtual pc and install 98 onto that

Get a spare hard drive (2Gb would do). Make 2 partitions. Install win98 on it. Leave a partition spare.
Make a ghost image of the win98 installation. You can then get the ghost image into a USB flash drive or a CD.

You can then write the ghost image to the 2nd partition of the drive you have. D: drive.

You'll then need a boot loader. I think there are ways to make XP dual boot. A google search will show you.

Just thinking about this further, you'll probably find win98 will not like the NTFS and throw a fit. I use the above method for installing Linux and win98 on a laptop. Having win98 on a ghost image means even if I accidentally kill the disk I can re-install fresh in a couple of minutes. There is some site that has all the windows security updates rolled up if you need them. A google search should reveal the sites. I think "unofficial windows 98 updates " might be a good place to start.
  • copy the win98 cd onto d: might trick it to install there
