choosing a new account????

hi, after being with the halifax for four years we have decided to see whether we could save any ££ by moving accounts..and also getting fed up with them for charges, which i know you get everywhere but surely some banks are moreflexible?! maybe not!
but it will give me great pleasure to tell them we r off!!

we are a young couple we would be paying in over £1000 per month (i am going to b a student but will have seperate account for that as the new account will pay DDs and my student ££ will be "spend "
we currently have a £250 odraft and would need that in the new account, or near enough, cos we would have tp pay it off with halifax when leaving i presume..

so a low odraft limit is important and thats probably it. we dont get any extras with halifax..despite the ads!!

Suggest you try and get a student account, normally free overdraft and other perks with that make them a good deal.

As for your second account you need to balance up what matters for you. Probably not the interest rate as it sounds like you don't have much in the account.

I'd try and find something with a good 'free' overdraft limit, good customer service and a good value overdraft rate.

I'd suggest getting an HSBC student account and a FirstDirect current account. That way transfers between the two are same day.

You might find the first direct account helps you avoid charges too. You can call them anytime to check balances and they have a good web service. Their text message service is quite nifty too and can tell you when you go overdrawn, so you can transfer money across or stop spending.

I think they also give you £10 if they mess up transferring any details from your halifax account across (like direct debits).

The only slight problem might be your income and credit record, but you should be ok with £1000 a month coming in.

PS. Others worth looking at: Co-op/Smile, Nationwide and Alliance and Leicester (although their charges are pretty high to fund the good rates and deals they offer).

hi thnaks i have opened a natwest student account as suggested on here with a big overdraft as a backup and discounted rail travel. we are paying at the monet over £2400 a month into the halifax this will drop to around £1300 on one income with £500+ going inoto my student account. we have a good credit rating a £250 overdraft but we only use if for the last 4days on monthly pay parnter is weekly so hopefully get it cleared..would it be best to clear it b4 moving accounts?just feel we arent getting anyhting from the halifax except lies!!!!

just an update i have now registered with online banking with halifax..should have done it ages ago i now feel in control of my cash!!!!
and i can now see that we only use overdraft for around two days so will soon have that paid off......i hope!!!
