B&Q complete re-fit bathroom quote

Options
Just wanted to know the fairness of what they have offerred me.

B&Q have quoted me the following:
Suite £337
Gravity shower mixer £129
Bath screen £78
End panel £29
Tiles £454 (this includes tiles with holes in and tacos)

Remove & dispose suite £298
Install suite £559
Remove tiles £560
Replace tiles £987
Plaster to decorative finish £495
Box in pipework £56
Install shower screen £56
Install bonding £77
Replace gravity shower £123
Plasterboard ceiling £154
Install laminate flooring £80

+ a few other things adds up to about £4400 with 20% discount on products
(bathroom 1.5m x 3m)

Any good or a rip off? I don't have experience of this kind of thing so don't know if I would mess things up trying to remove the old suite or tiles myself.

Dolphin quoted me £6100

  • Good afternoon: I'll admit my bias but the quote from B&Q is a ripoff. Try to source your materials from plumbers' merchants and independent tile shops. To find a qualified plumber visit the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering www.iphe.org.uk . Get at least 3 fully itemized quotations and compare like for like.

As a rough comparison I just quoted £1100 (including materials) on a bathroom of 1.8m x 2m for:-

    Removal of a existing suite
    Removal of tiles
    Skim an artex ceiling
    Box in some pipes
Install new suite (also re-arranged layout)
Tile floor to ceiling on all walls
    Tile Floor

So adding your suite, shower & tiles @ £1027 would come out at a total of £2127.

Even though your bathroom is larger than the above it seems a fair bit too much.

As Canucklehead said get 3 local bathroom fitters to give you a quote on the work and source your own suite (www.screwfix.com etc...).

    That sounds ridiculous.

Ask around and get someone to install it independently. I've been quoted about £600 for the labour (complete refit with tiling and disposal), I'll source all the other bits myself.

  • Hi,

Whilst I would not advise you to purchase anything from b&q. The price isnt that far off if the fixtures were of a nice quality.

If you want to save some money then remove your suite and tiles yourself as this is not a skilled job.

Sammz your quote of £600 is far too cheap and I would guess that you will be extremely disappointed with the finish.

Is there a big shortage of plumbers, I can't find any in my area using that site, have even searched further afield and nothing coming up.

I bought a new bathroom from B&Q and arranged for them to fit it. I knew I would be paying above average for the work but thought I would be guaranteed to have a good job done. WHAT A BIG MISTAKE.

 A whole catalogue of errors including wrong suite delivered, faulty equipment, bad tiling, and recurring faults meant that 9 months later I still did not have a completely finished bathroom.

:eek::eek: Customer service was appalling, calls not returned, no-one prepared to take responsibility. Not even visiting the store could elicit one person to deal with the issues, you could only ever speak to a duty manager there was apparantly not one person in overall control. I would never ever use them again even at half the price.

:j I then had a kitchen fitted by a small local firm, everything went very smoothly and the cost was very reasonable. How I wish I had used a similar firm for my bathroom.

Good morning: Perhaps members of the IPHE in your area and beyond have chosen not to opt in to the online listing...problems with spam, crank calls etc can occur...down here only three plumbers appear on the site, one being my OH.

  • My new neighbours are having their bathroom gutted and replaced (1930's semi so not huge bathrooms) Having an independent firm doing the work which will take two weeks and they are paying £8,000. I tried very hard to act cool and be happy for them and didn't mention that I had nearly passed out when quoted £167 for a custom made roller blind for my bathroom window and scuttled off to B&Q and bought one for £17. Think they must have won the lottery and yes I am green with envy !!
  • having my bathroom re-done price all in is £3780 (not inc tiles but includng the price of actually tiling)
