Selling a car

Options
Hello everyone,
New to the site so hope we are in the right section for this question?
I would be grateful for any tips anyone can give me on selling our car privatley. Its something we have never done before and so we want to know the best places to advertise ect + any tips.
Also scared stiff of getting ripped off (not getting paid) scams ect.
Hope someone can help.
Thanks

I sold a car through ebay and my big tip would be loads of photos, we did tons of them from all sorts of angles, inside and out. We were paid cash on collection, dont think I would bother with any other form of payment, but thats just me.

i can't offer any specific advice about selling cars, all i can say is don't accept paypal..whatever you do. cash on collection or payment by bank transfer beforehand only.

We have just sold our car through eBay. We also advertised through the Autotrader (on-line and magazine) I would never advertise through them as all we got was scam emails! Yes eBay with lots and lots of photos! Good Luck

I will be needing to sell my car soon, I have never sold a car privately before! Is bank transfer a safe way to get paid? Can they do fraudulent transfers, that vanish out of your account like the fake bankers drafts out there?

Is cash and bank transfer the only safe way of getting paid? Bank notes can be forged also...
  • hi, i have sold 3-4 cars on e-bay, you need to have lots of pictures and be totaly honest! if it has a scratch tell people about it. if it is a car that will sell for a lot of money ask for say 500 pounds deposit at the end of the auction and cash on collection. that way you will only get serious bidders. be very wairy of people e-mailing you offering to give you more money than the car is worth. What i mean is say your car is worth 6,000 and they offer to pay 8,000 pounds they will tell you to take 6,000 pounds out of a bankers draft and give the man picking up the car the other 2,000 pounds (money laundering) dont laugh it happend to me! i contacted the police who advised me to stay well clear.

    hope this helped

i just sold my dads escort on ebay at the beginning of the week, best advise as above, take plenty of pictures, you dont get charged for extra pics if selling a car.
    list as honest as possible.
expect people to want to view the car before bidding (although nobody viewed mine).
take photos of the good and bad bits.
    only accept cash on collection.
be prepared for lots of questions.most will be asking how much you want for it,so if you want to avoid lots of emails state your asking price in the auction description.
my buyer was the perfect buyer, came and collected the car next evening, made sure the car started and then handed over the cash, thats how it should be,but you may find you get non paying bidders who dont get in touch with you, or someone who wants to haggle over the price when they arrive to collect it,dont accept this.

cant think of anything else at the moment.

    good luck with the sale.
