Very good. A light and very fast alternative to Adobe Acrobat. Worth trying if you're finding Acrobat to be slow.

Acrobat loads up instantly for me, so I don't yet have the need to switch.

Just tried this on Acrobat 5.0 (I'd removed all later versions 'cos they took so long to load...!) Removed everything excepy EWH32.api...
    Brilliant!
I may even try a newer version now.
    Very many thanks!

  • rizla01, I've followed your instructions but now when I start up Adobe I get 3 error messages saying "xyz plugin has failed to initialize" which I have to OK before the program runs: is there any way of getting rid of these do you know?
    Thanks, Half_Asleep.

    Hi Half asleep.

I would replace all of the contents of the plug-in folder and see what happens then remove them one at a time untill the prob re-occurs then remove the others and replace the one that caused the error.

Then Google the error mesage and see what comes up. Others may have had the same problem.

Sounds to me as if there might have been a problem with Adobe that didn't show before the changes. In which case you need to download and install Adobe from scratch, again and then make the above alterations.

    Hope this helps,

    Riz

I had the same problem when opening certain documents. The tip works fine until you open a document that actually requires one or more of the plugins that you disabled

Thanks for the tip though :T

This came from FurryGoat who got it from Sanjay's Coding Tips who found it at Darrell Norton's blog. It's a short list of things to do to speed up the launching of Adobe's Reader

machine upgrade...It is all the plug-ins that are enabled by default slowing Acrobat reader down. After removing all but 3, it loads pretty much instantly.

Here's how to do it: VERY SIMPLE!! VERY EFFECTIVE!!

Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader (replace the C if you installed on another drive, like I did).

Create a new folder called plug_ins_disabled.

Move all files from the plug_ins folder to the plug_ins_disabled folder except EWH32.api, printme.api, and search.api.

There should only be these 3 files in the plug_ins folder.

    You're done.

    Enjoy.

I have stumbled along to the point above "create a new folder called plug_ins_disabled",

What I need to do next is move files from one folder the the one I have created but I cannot figure out how to do this. Can anyone help me?

I really think I need to do this because every time I go into anything that brings up the Adobe Acrobat Reader, my computer completely freezes up and the only thing I can do is Ctrl+Alt+Del!!

Well, you probably used Windows Explorer to create the folder, and you also use WE to move files. There are various methods: the Task Pane, the Edit menu, drag and drop, or keyboard shortcuts. For example see http://www.geekgirls.com/absolute_beginners_06.htm and http://www.sou.edu/it/howtodocs/winxp/xpwinexplorer.shtml

Alternatively, download PDFspeedup mentioned in this post.
