Most airline "miles" schemes are aimed at business men (and politicians !) where their employer is paying for full fare tickets.
If you are paying out of your own pocket you are much better off scouting round looking for cheap flights in the first place.

I've been a member for some years, and at one point had saved enough miles for a free return flight within Europe. I found that although the flight would have been free, the "taxes and charges" would have amounted to slightly more than the cost of doing the equivalent journey by Easyjet. So no good to me.

However, the miles can be donated to charity, and there is a "shop" in which you can exchange your miles for goods, although their purchasing power is minimal. So, if you are going to use an airline that belongs to this scheme, it is worth taking the minute or so required to sign up on the basis that the miles MIGHT be of some value in the future. (I planned a busines trip to India on Lufthansa, and calculated that I would probably have enough miles for an upgrade to business class on the way back. I checked more carefully and it wouldn't quite have worked for me, so I used Emirates instead.)

Note that this experience came after three intercontinental return journeys with Luthansa group (two trips to China).

Remember that the cheapest tickets on Lufthansa give you few or no miles: flights on their partners like Austrian or Swiss are rewarded a little more generously.
