Thanks being abused in The Arms

MSE_Martin wrote:Ted I understand what you're saying, but I disagree
Thanks is a thank you nothing more, its just as valuable in the arms as anywhere else. When we have some developer time i may get rid of the word 'useful' but i thin this issue is overblown.

For well adjusted, sexually active and physically active individuals self-esteem is not an issue but some of us are not so fortunate.
For me the opportunity to appear in the list of most thanked site users is important and that opportunity is being denied by the over use of the Thanks button by those in the ARMS to reward bandwith hogging puff and nonsense.
I am not wanting to put a damper on the way the Arms operates. I appreciate it serves a function. I just feel it creates friction for those who feel they do need to obtain some kind of recognition for the work they do here if those posts are included in the list by which members are officially recognised. If there were two or more lists there'd be no problem.
In case anyone is thinking I am getting at the contribution of the Competitions posters. I'm not. I hope those people are fully aware I know how much effort is required to fill that role but I think my time is better employed elsewhere.
Edit: One further thought. I think readers new to the site should take note of the fact that I use my real name and also my real address is available from the site. I think where someone's real identity rather than an online alias, is at stake over an issue as trivial as this, due recognition should be given to that fact. In other words if your real identity and reputation is at issue you may take these arguements as seriously as I do.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

I think you have just hit the nail on the head Ted,the league table is the thing that causes the friction ............and should go IMO
without the league table no-one will be in contest with anyone else
how does anyone tell if thanks are given for useful,I liked that, that was funny ,thanks for trying to help, thanks for the effort or this thanks is really important to you0 -
Im not sure why this subject keeps on appearing, everyone is going to hold the same argument that has been had time and time again, and come from exactly the same perspective as they always have!
One point I think is missing from this whole arguement so far is simply this is not OUR site, this is Martins site and we are lucky enough to use it. We can use it exactly how we please within the few restraints which are set down by Martin, which basically equate to be nice to each other and I think we should all show some respect for how Martin wants to run HIS site.
He has answered in this thread how HE feels about the thanks button, so why not just have some respect leave it at that!0 -
here we go again! I think just close the thread as its turning into a pointless one (no offensive to the OP)0

There are far more important things in life to worry about rather than if someone has got more thanks than you! I could not care less how many people thank me. Its not something I check all the time.
Lastly, if I want to thank someone for a post then thats up to me.
Every time a new thread is started about 'thanks' its the same posts being made time and time again and its now just old news!0 -
having read this (and the previous threads) on the subject of the thanks button, it seems to me that the best and obvious way to get rid of all the friction is to remove the League Table. Now I ain't a techie and I don't know how easy that is to do but it surely must be the answer to stop all the fighting?
That way the Thanks can stay as Martin wants but the list of those thanked goes. Maybe someone could start a poll to see how people feel
me, I ain't fussed really cos I ain't got many thanks anyways :rotfl:0 -
Martin,
Is it possible to bring forward the web time (would it take long to do?) to get the Arms as a seperate table or remove the "league table" as these seem to be the main objections that come up again and again? It seems that these alterations would keep most people happy and if it's left isn't it going to come up again & again as new people think about it?Torgwen.....................

Okay I'm going to close this thread for now and it may also be deleted
All that's happening is that the same arguments are being restated again and again. Nothing new is being added.
Can I point out that Abcon/Admin can see all deleted threads so user's opinions on this matter are not lost and I'm sure they'll be taken into account when decisions on this subject are made0
