Hi,
I'm currently living in a rented, furnished studio flat - and my utilities are paid as part of my rent (I just pay my rent each month, and the bills go to the LL).
I'm giving my LL a months notice to leave, starting tomorrow, and I'm going to be moving into a rented house - where the utilities will be my responsibility.
The house has credit meters for both gas and electricity fitted, so I should be able to go onto an ordinary monthly direct debit plan, however how do I go about this?
Never having had utilities in my own name before, I can't just call my existing suppliers and tell them I'm moving. How do I know who is currently supplying the property? (somebody is, as the lights work! ) and do I have to go with them or can I go with another supplier, who offers a better deal?
Thanks in advance...

I'm in same boat - moving shortly... here's what I got;
(By the way, I don't know if you'll need any meter details or anything, so you might need to do this when you move in, not before)
Gas
Information on gas suppliers is held by the transporters.
They are the only organisations that can confirm who the gas supplier is for any property you are responsible for at the time. For the vast majority of consumers, gas is transported by National Grid, Northern Gas Networks, Scotland Gas Networks, Southern Gas Networks or Wales & West Utilities.
To find out your supplier with any of these companies, call 0870 608 1524.
Electric
You can find out who your supplier is by calling your local distribution company. Each one keeps a record of who supplies electricity to every home in their area. You need to speak to their Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS) and give them your address, including postcode.
The phone numbers for the distribution companies are below and are usually open normal 'office hours'. Choose the area where you live:

Afterwards
Once you've found out who supplies, you'll need to ring em as soon as you move in and setup an account with them. You can't just go with a random supplier, because you are liable for all utilities used until the switch is complete - you automatically enter into a deemed contract with the supplier, so it doesn't matter if you never agree to anything.
Once you've setup an account, you can switch to any supplier you like. This can take some time, and when the switch is complete, you'll receive a final bill from the old supplier.
