Does Microsoft office come with a disc? My mum has just had a new computer and paid for Office 2007 home and student. To cut a very long story short, the guy who she bought it from (has a computer shop) seems to be trying to fob her off because he gave her a key number and so has office working. In my mind she should have a disc, but he is now trying to tell her that they don't have a disc because of fraud reasons. He had previously said that it would be in on such and such a day or the other guy had it with him. They seem to be making excuses. She has e-mailled to say she will get it somewhere else and she wants her money back but no success. Any suggestions please??

I suspect that the simple answer is there is no simple answer. You can buy office for students without a disc and you can buy it with a disc. If you buy direct from MS (via ultimatesteal site above) then by default you don't get the disc you just get a download (however for £9 extra as I recall - don't quote me) they microsoft will post you the disk.

My advice is to speak to the retailer one last time and inform them that you will be contacting microsoft fraud dept, (if you bought from a car boot sale then you might as well give up, but if the guy is a proper retailer then you should get the desired outcome (if he is genuine, and the software genuine - then either he'll give you something tangable or microsoft will at bear minimum confirm you have nothing to worry about; if he is running a dodgy buisness then he will probably try and keep you sweet - you don't want to take MS on fraud department on!) Incidentally microsoft fraud used to give you a free genuine box set just for blowing the whistle on dodgy retailers!

You should be able to MS technical support free if you have only activated the software in the past month too.

Incidentally how much did she pay for the software - because if she paid much more than £50 she was done anyway, perhaps she could just ask for a refund, and buy from the ultimatesteal or rm

Finally if she has a genuine version, genuine license etc, she should be able to get the disc from MS direct for less than £10, check with technical support - unless someone here has the link ready

One more thing to add - how did you get the code (if he had wrote the number on a piece of paper then safe bet it is fraudulent, if it was typed on an orange sticker then safe bet it was genuine, if it was typed on printout then could be either way.

  • Thanks for advice and info Horlock. The problem is still on going so I will pass this on to my Mum and let her decide what her next move should be. She is actually tired of trying to contact the guy as he doesn't seem to be very helpful over what she should or shouldn't have, so I will let her decide. Thanks again.
