When I go to control panel -> system -> device manager -> there's no hard disks tab ? looked under properties of disk drives and get 4 tabs (general, policies, volumes, driver but no mention of current transfer mode in any of them ? )

O.K., I'm on my own computer with admin rights now. It's Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers -> [click on the controller whatever it's called] -> Primary channel tab. There you can see the transfer mode.

    Rave,
Thanks checked the transfer mode of the hard drive and it is running UDMA mode5'

    All,
Then as suggested checked what process were running, and surpise surpise my Mcafee Security center is using uotp 99% of CPU and when I looked at CPU performance its maxed out at 100% all the time.

So I went to msconfig and stopped all Mcafee products starting up and re-booted, got a message on startup that i've changed something and should go back and tick start all services but ignored that to see how it went.
    And its running fine now.

So should I uninstall all Mcafee products ? bet I have aggro with them!!

Not immediately. Just stop them running at start up for the time being.
Did you have the XP firewall on at the same time?

Try letting them run again. If the problem reoccurs, then disable them and use some of the free alternative products. Zone Alarm etc

Do this, connect to the net, start run and type in command then in the box type netstat and see how many connection there are?
If there is a lot of connections in the box? someone is using your bandwith for ads

I thought I'd try this but the screen flashes with data for 1/2 sec and dissappears, any reason why? On XP
