Wrong National Insurance Number?

Not sure if this is the right part of this forum - so sorry if not!

I recently had to fill in a form which asked for my and DH national insurance numbers.

I know mine (being a good form filler inner) and I know the start and end of DH's.

The file with all such information in is in a box in a small cupboard underneath a mounting pile of accumulated baby stuff (does a baby REALLY need all that?!) and I couldn't be bothered to dig it out.

Asked DH if he had anything else with his NI number on it and he said there were probably some old pay slips in a drawer somewhere. I eventually found them and the NI number on it was not what I remembered as being his number. There were about half a dozen slips there (dating back to about 2000) don't know where the rest are as he's so disorganised.

I said "this isn't your number" - he said "well it must be" so in the end I had to empty out the aforementioned cupboard to get at the file and lo and behold - I was right; the number on all DWP/HMRC etc communication is the one I had in my head.

So - and sorry for the long preamble - what are the consequences of this?

He worked for that particular company for nearly three years and I can only assume that all his pay slips (wherever they may be) have the wrong NI number on them.

As far as I recall, we've never had any communication from anyone highlighting this error and I'm wondering if it would have been sorted at source and the NI people will have worked out what his proper number is and attributed payments accordingly. Or has he paid someone elses NI credits for 3 years?!

Who does he need to contact to sort it out or clarify the situation?

Any advice or comments gratefully received!

I am from Prague originally, work in health sector for 5 pounds per hour, thats the basics
-worked in the Uk for 3.5 months got NI NUMBER PAID CONTRIBUTIONS OK, WENT BACK TO PRAGUE, CAME BACK NEXT YEAR I LOST MY P45 FORM IN THE MEANTIME UNFORTUNATLEY
-BACK TO UK NEW JOB THEY DID NOT MADE ME FILL OUT P46 FORM BOSS SAID SHED TAKE CARE OF IT, WORKED THERE FOR 17 MONTHS AND DURING THIS TIME I HAD A TEMPORARY NI.NR BIRTH DATE AND F ON IT,(THIS I ONLY DISCOVERED, REALISED AFTER RESEARCH ABOT TAX AND SO) EVEN TOUGH I HAD A CORRECT ONE , TROUBLE IS I NEVER PAID MUCH ATTENTION TO MY PAYSLIPS EXCEPT FOR THE SALARY AND ASSUMED ALL WAS FINE
    - GOT NEW JOB EX BOSS DIDNT SEND ME P45 I ONLY HAVE P60S(WHICH DOES NOT STATES NI NR AT ALL) SO NEW EMPLOYER MADE ME FILL OUT P46 FORM, OUT OF CARELESSNESS I GOT 1 NUMBER WRONG THE LAST ONE, I CONTACTED INL.REV AND TO MY SURPRISE , MY NI NR. DID NOT MATCH SOME DATA ON THEIR RECORDS SO I STARTED TO CHECK ALL OLD PAYSLIPS AND, AND TO MY HORROR I DISCOVERED THAT ON MY 17 MONTH TIME PERIOD LENGTH OLD JOB BEFORE, THERE WAS A COMPLETELY DIFFFERENT NUMBER, IF ONE NUMBER WOULD HAVE BEEN WRONG, OK, BUT ALL??

?WHY DID MY 17 MONTH EMPLOYER NOT USED MY PROPER NI NR, BUT A TEMP, ONE I MEAN P45 I DIDNT BUT NI. CARD I DID HAVE , DO HAVE?!
WHERE ARE MY CONTRIBUTIONS PAID DURING THAT TIME?
I MEAN I AM FOREIGN MY ENGLISH IS GREAT, BUT UP UNTIL NOW I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THESE THINGS, NOW I SPEND MORE TIME ON HMRC-S WEBSITE, THEN ON MY EMAILS.
(I AM ALSO PANICKY ANYWAY SO THAT DOES NOT HELP EITHER.

To answer your question about your NI number (NINO)-If your employer used a temporary NINO because he didn't know your correct number, this should not be too much of a problem.

A temporary NINO is 'TNXXXXXX M or F - 'TN' is Temporary Number,XXXXXX is your date of birth (for example 01/03/80=010380), and then your sex- Male or Female, and of course your name.

With all this information, the Inland Revenue (now called HMRC), can trace all of your Tax and NI contributions paid, and record them on your Tax & NI records.

Tell HMRC ALL your employment details- UK employer name/ UK town/how long you worked/when you worked/all of your adddresses in UK.
Also send HMRC copies of ALL payslips/letters from employers you have.

This will help HMRC trace and correct all of your Tax and NI contributions paid- but this may take many weeks.

Prague is a lovely city and I have been twice in the last 18 months.

    Hope this helps.
