question about i-pods

My daughter has got an i-pod, when our computer conked out i-tunes was lost. She had to re-load every single song back on, then transfer them back on, she says you can't save them on the device itself, because its linked with i-tunes.
Is this correct? I'm really not very good with devices, but surely there must be a way of the i-pod saving the songs independently?
Any advice / infor gratefully recieved, because we may need to get a new computer soon, and she'll have to load it all over again!

You have to chose the option to "Manually manage music and videos".

You don't need an ipod to use itunes, but you do need itunes to use an ipod.
If you change your computer in the future, backup all your music before you change. It would probably be easiest to backup onto a pendrive, CD or DVD, depending on how much music you have.

Not true!I've never used itunes for my ipod,only vPod,a much better prog & free too.

You can also use Winamp to interface with your ipod!
