Brick cleaning / pointing

Options
Hi All

I live in a bay fronted semi that was previously rendered (not much actual brick as bay is tiled).

I was thinking of having somebody clean the brickwork and re-point the mortar, but have a couple of questions :

- would the cleaning be a shot-blast type ? (would this damage window frames etc. ?)

- would I need a brick cleaner and a builder to do this, or are there people who would do this as a single job.

- does anybody have any idea as to costs ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Do the bricks really need heavy-duty cleaning? What's on them that needs cleaning off?

If it is just natural deposits, e.g. moss, algae, soot these should just scrub off with a general hard surface cleaner. - (Or you can just regard it as natural patina!)

If it is render residue you may find a cup brush on an angle grinder used only where necessary will do the job - and not strip the brick surface.

If it is just the bay window bricks that need repointing it will be relatively expensive for the size (economies of scale etc). If you have any other areas that need attention it would be cheaper in the long-term to get them all done at once.

If just a small area for repointing can you DIY?
