It's ages since I did this and I just cant remember the best, quickest and easiest way to do it. I've got a steamer (cant find instructions atm!) but I seem to remember something about
wetting the wallpaper first
scouring the wallpaper with a sharp implement
using sugar soap solution
Can somebody please help! I cant even remember which order you do it in (i.e. wet walls, THEN scour?

Hi Ellie,
If you have a steamer you dont need to do any wetting or anything else.
Just fill steamer with water, wait for it to boil and off you go! all you need is a good scraper! BTW, if you leave the room (for a brew etc,) turn the steamer off, or you will end up with a sauna!0 -
I had woodchip wallpaper in EVERY room of my old flat and found that I still had to score before steaming... If you haven't got a steamer, score then spray the walls with water with washing up liquid added. Works a treat.0

Try not to leave the steamer on one spot for any longer than is absolutely necessary else it may blow the plaster - then you'll have to chip off loose plaster and make good.

You also have to score the paper if it has been painted over.0

Thanks button not working now. SO thanks to all of you.
The paper IS painted over so I guess we should have scored even with the steamer (note the past tense...............)
Never mind, we'll know for next time.Ellie :cool:

if you are not repapering , be careful not to score the plaster as well0

I have successfully used plastic plant sprayers with very hot water in them. (99p shops have them). I just give the wallpaper a good old spray, leave it for a little while and go back and peel off. I just use a wallpaper scraper and never have a problem.
I don't actually "scour" the wall ever - I just gently ease it off with scraper and that avoids making any marks in the wall.0 -
I agree with Pennylane, using a sprayer or sponge with hot water and a dash of fairy liquid works extremely well. I had to revert to that method from using a steam stripper as the plasterwork isn't great in my house (already had to have 3 rooms re-plastered/skimmed) as it can cause the plaster to blow if held on for too long.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

Dead easy isn't it Chameleon? I also meant to add that I also give the walls a good old wash down and remove any weeny bits of paper left behind - then I start the papering. As my hubby keep telling me .... preparation is everything!!;)

Those poor kids in Bulgaria Chameleon - I remember watching that programme and being horrified by it. This must NOT be allowed to carry on - a total disgrace!0
