I wanna new bathroom....

I'm looking for someone to come and fit me a new bathroom, plus put in a fan and tile the walls. I'm thinking about using B & Q but I haven't had a quote yet, has anyone used this service?
Ideally i'd like the job to be done quickly...the man who came to do my kitchen took 2 hours to remove just 8 tiles from the wall...no joke...it got ridiculous...he went off for a piece of wood on the Wednesday and said he'd be back in half an hour...I didn't see him until the following Tuesday.....in the end I had to tell him not to bother coming back...even now my kitchen is falling to bits...so as you can see, i'm a bit worried about having further work done in the house.
Has anyone else had a new bathroom fitted recently and received a really good, quick service?

Though B&Q are a national company, they will sub-contract out the installation and therefore you can end up with installers that are just as bad (what ever B&Q say). The best thing to do is to ask as many people that you can and try to get recommendations. I have known B&Q to give an awful service.Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

I think there is probably one advantage in going with B&Q, and that is that if there are any issues surrounding the work then (depending on the contract) you hold B&Q directly responsible, i.e. you bought goods / services from B&Q, the fact that they sub-contracted out the work is not relevant. It depends on who you actually pay the money to, i.e. B&Q might say 'just pay the fitters when the jobs done'. If you can pay B&Q and consider paying them on a credit card then you have the best of both worlds regarding protection should the work turn out to be below standard / expectations.

All good points. Can I add that the acrylic baths that I have seen on display are quite thin. I think they are 3mm thick which is about as thin as they get. Ideally, you wanna get an 8mm bath, 5mm would be minimum.
Take a trip onto your local industrial site and locate the plumbers merchants. They will have a whole range of baths, suites etc to offer and the staff will know a bit about them. They'll probably give you a few local names to call about installing.
We bought a cloakroom suite last year from our localsupplier and all in with taps, toilet seat etc it was way cheaper than B&Q.
Hope this helps...

Although B & Q sub contaract the fitting you pay them the total price. They did our fitted Kitchen & my parent's kitchen. MY parents had a great job done very efficiently, ours was a nightmare. The fitters were 3 hours late for a pre fit survey they moved a socket which was not requested, thier electrician ran a power cable diagonally which is illegal unless the cable is shielded (cables run vertically or horizontal). they never plastered over the cable. the oven had no vents so was overheating. (turned out faulty oven, which was replaced with a £200 more expensive model at no extra cost) At the end of the fiasco I was on first name terms with the manager of the store.
So I would suggest speak to friends, family & speak with local tradesmen. A colleague put me in touch with his cousin, a joiner. Although he is not always the quickest he is not expensive & does a great job.Every day above ground is a good day.0 -
Where does your cousin's joiner live Nige? I think it would be great to have a database of decent tradesmen on here.
I also want a new bathroom (in Middlesbrough) but I'm terrified of getting ripped off or not getting the best bargain.
Just want to pay the right price for a good job. Any more feedback appreciated!0 -
This may be of help? It is a government backed scheme to find reputable workmen/women....

There is even a warranty scheme with the following benefits such as deposit protection and a SIX year warranty on work...0 -

My colleagues cousin lives in sunny Ayr by the sea (sw Scotland). But like I said ask friends colleagues etc you never know what will come up. I have since found out that a lot of my colleagues were brickies plumbers & sparks in thier previous jobs.Every day above ground is a good day.0
