  • ok..this is just a copy and paste so not a personal recommendation..but this guy if he's still around might be worth asking for advice

However, my boiler was recently serviced by John Drabble, who believe it or not not only used to work for Maxol, the makers of many of the boilers at GP, but actually helped design many of them! He now works as a freelance engineer. He is a very genial and professional man, and suffice to say I doubt we'll see him on "Rogue Traders"!
He can work on other makes of boilers too - but GP is equipped almost entirely with Maxol boilers and Gledhill tanks (with which he is also very familiar) and strikes me as honest enough to say if he's not your man.

Mobile 07813 800 004 Robert Owen: John Drabble serviced my Maxol boiler in February 2004. Cost about £110. Very thorough. He worked at Maxol, so knows the units well, and he has all the parts.

Thanks. Worth considering - though the engineer did have a list of parts that he wanted to get hold of.. the gasket just being the main one, I believe. I may have to bite the bullet on this one I guess, but I'm happy at least that I won't be rolled over by BG.

They wanted me to have a Glowworm boiler. But a different Corgi engineer told me others should be suitable, and recommended Worcester-Bosch.Any thoughts?

Good afternoon: My OH (CORGI) is quite keen on Vaillant...he has been installing the Ecotec Plus range (combis and sytem boilers) Customers have commented on how quiet the Vaillants are....a bit pricier than Glow-worm (which he has now sworn off:mad: ) but on par with Worcester Bosch pricewise. If he had to chose between the two he would go with Vaillant as their products have stainless steel heat exchangers. When you get quotes in post the details on MSE and we can comment.

The sales guy told me today that the only circumstance in which the policy would have paid for a new boiler was if it was less than seven years old and, most importantly, had been installed by British Gas.

not true as far as i can tell. Nothing in the small print I can see mentioning that.

    £110! and 4 years ago - to just service a boiler(How much now £130?)

That to me is very expensive.

It almost makes BG's Homecare plan, which includes a service and covers the whole CH system for a year, good value!!
  • If you read the whole posting properly ..the whole issue revolved around the non availability of parts and the likelyhood of the original poster having to replace the boiler as a result at a suggested minimum expenditure of 2K..

..The suggestion about the chap that I found was that HE HAD THE PARTS.thankyou

I had read the whole thread(thank you) and I appreciate that BG would not repair as parts were available etc etc.

This thread, as understandably most do, covered many aspects of boiler servicing and the merits of different boilers as replacements.

I was making the general point that £110 at 2003/4 prices is a lot of money for just a boiler service and was not denigrating your research or advice which was specific to the OP's problem.
