Looking to buy a new Golf GTi

I am desperately hoping some of you can point me in the right direction. I am stuck between a Golf GTi or a Honda Type R. Heart tells me the Golf, although there is a new model out in a years time, andit's about 3k more expensive than the Type R.

Leather interior is now standard on the GTi and I was hoping some car brokers would have the cloth ones to shift at a lower price, but I cannot find anything. These cars just don't seem to get discounted much. I am after white or red, preferably DSG, but not totally tied to it, but it has to be UK stock, not imported. The best I can find is about 1k off with the leather.

On the other hand, a dealer offered me 1k off the Type R while another would only give me the upgraded alloys, and another just £200 off.

I have test driven the Type R and while I really like it apart from the inability to see the bonnet (I'm a bad parker) but my heart does lie a bit more with a Golf.

    Try these guys http://www.motorprovider.uk.com/

They have cheap deals on Golf Gti's. They are Uk models and I have bought a Car from them before.

I would go for the Golf personally; it is much more 'complete' as a car IMO and great to live with everyday. Could you put up with the poor ride and lack of torque in the Honda to live with?

The Mk6 Golf is due next year, but the GTI version will probably not follow until 2010. The residual value of the Golf should be strong.

You should be able to get more than £1000 off through a broker; try

http://www.bettercardeal.co.uk/configure.php?carid=13032 for over £2k off list configured to your exact spec (Over 11% off list is VERY good going for this spec)

I'd also discuss your spec with Motorprovider who have some in stock or on short lead times, http://www.motorprovider.uk.com/golf_gti_stock3dr.htm

    Hope this helps

Thanks for that. problem is, both of those companies are selling the cloth and not the current spec so it's really not overly reduced compared to a dealership.

Isn't that what you were looking for? You said that if you could find cloth ones for a discount that would be good.

But it's just the same price as before, about 2k off list price which now includes leather, so in effect it's not been discounted in the way the list price has been (with the free extras). But £17300 at MP is v v good, and looking on autotrader quite a few 1 year olds same spec are going for more.

I actually called BetterCarDeals and they are doing it with leather. Can get 3 door DSG for 20170 or no DSG for 18860, both with leather, both on the road, and with armrest (which was the thing I also wanted) so these are good prices. Just wish it was a little bit less as I use it about once a week for a few hours. :(
  • Have you called them to discuss the specs?

The BetterCarDeals price is pretty good to be honest; I would either take that price and phone up a few dealers and say you would like to place an immediate order for the right price, or use autoebid to set up a reverse auction ending in a couple of days time, this should get the price including fees dipping below 20k for a 3d DSG inc leather.

Remember that it's now the end of the month so if you say you can place an immediate order dealers will be more likely to sell at cost to meet sales targets in a typically slow month.

You will be hard pressed to get more than 11% off list on the Golf. The Motorprovider 3d DSG cloth is on 3-4 week lead time inc centre armrest for £19295.

I would personally include the armrest as essential, and the multi-function steering wheel with highline computer. The 18" Monzas look better and are a favourable option come resale but the ride isn't quite so good and if you're as bad at parking as you say then be warned they curb easily!

You could buy a nice second hand golf for 4-5k and save yourself a packet!!

Personally if I was only going to be using it that infrequently and putting hardly any miles on it, I would look at one nearly new in excellent condition. There's plenty of choice in the classifieds on Autotrader, or try browsing the GTI classifieds at http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.asp?s=692

Cheers guys. 2nd hand prices aren't that good which is what attracts me to this car anyway, its residuals are v v good. I'll keep looking. BCP are good too.

Anyone any idea of what cost would be for these?

I assume you mean PCP deals? The brokers can give you a quote on their discounted price, I would haggle with the dealer to match the broker price and then see what VW Finance can offer you in terms of a PCP deal.

Alternatively try a third party finance house based on your best quote for a more competitive PCP such as
