Second jobs?

I have been doing second jobs in addition to my main job for a while now and it just becomes like second nature and part of your normal routine very quickly to the point where you do not even notice that you are doing anything extra after a very short while.

With second jobs, does your main job have to know about it, for tax and NI and stuff? Am also a bit worried about having to ask main job for a reference, although the extra money would really come in handy...0

I think that it depends on the terms and conditions of your contract for your main job whether you need to tell your employer or not but for both of my second jobs I just filled in a p46 form where I left the tick boxes blank because none of the categories were applicable and the Inland Revenue people worked all of the rest of it out for me.

Don't think your main job have to know?
Unless it is cash in hand then it will be taxed at source anyway I think...
I think the only time it would cause a prob with your main job would be if you go into the same area ie a rival company to your main job if you know what I mean?DMP with PayplanDMP Support number 287Trying to lose lbs and save £££s!0 -
Some employers do put in your contract that they want to be advised if you are considering taking a second job, so might be worth checking.
Also to bear in mind - I worked 2 jobs (a few years ago mind) and got taxed quite heavily on the second income, regardless of how much I earned in my main job. I think it might have been an automatic rate of 25%???
Hope this helps and happy hunting.

You would have probably been taxed at basic rate on your second job (22%).
You get taxed no more on your second job than you do you first, its just that the first uses your personal allowance and the 10% band (soon to be abolished) whereas your second just goes straight in and taxes you at 22%.
When I had 2 jobs, I always used to work out how much tax I should have paid at the end of the tax year & then write to HMRC (or go along to a drop in centre) to claim a refund if I had overpaid.0 -
I have worked 2 jobs for the past 3 years & can't imagine what it would be like to have all my evenings free in the week!
In some ways I would like to have more free time to follow other interests & get involved in things like sport that i haven't got time for at the moment.
Advantage of working extra hours tho is it stops me spending lots more money going out, however I am always tired with only having one day off work a week. If I am needed to work extra hours at either job it can be a struggle to fit everything in but as someone else said, you just get used to it!
I love my second job (bar work) and don't enjoy main job (office based) half as much, so even if I was earning more money in main job (which i'm planning on doing soon by changing jobs) i'd still want to be doing bar work part time (albeit with reduced hours).Who says I have to be normal?

Yep, definately keep an eye on your tax code, I had lots of problems with paying too much tax on both jobs, to the point where i couldn't afford to pay my bills each month! Took ages to sort out. Getting the rebate has done wonders for my loan repayments tho!
