My bill WAS based on a meter reading not an estimate but they still got it wrong thats when they tried to double my payments.
IF powergen have got your meter reading wrong it will seem you are using more electric.
Are you sure the last meter reading was correct?as aussielle suggest.
  • checked the meter and it is higher than the bill reading so looks like it was correct. Have now stopped using the tumble dryer altogether, only doing any washing when it isn't raining. TV is getting switched off for most of the day as well and kids don't even seem to have noticed, shows how much they watch it. I just have a feeling that i'm missing something really obvious that is using loads of power, can't find any wires going next door though. I used to pay £52 a month with my previous supplier and when i switched there was no outstanding balance so something has changed somewhere.

If you can't understand where the electricity is going then another possibility is that the meter is wrong. They can become inaccurate with time. You can ask your electricity company to come out and test your meter. Check first if they will charge you for this. There won't be a fee if it turns out to be wrong but there might be if it turns out to be ok.
