i went on the organ donor register when i was 18. i am also on the bone marrow register via the anthony nolan trust and i usually give blood 3 times a year- am excluded at the mo cos i've just had a baby but will be back donating as soon as i am able.

i needed to have 4 pints of blood when i had dd who is now 7, and if someone hadnt taken the time to donate i would probably have died. this is my way of giving something back
    2011- new year, new start.

Thanks so much for highlighting this - I carried a card for years and then mislaid it and I am ashamed to say have never replaced it despite always intending to!
Away to sign up to both the organ donor and the MS tissue bank donation - I had never even heard of that one before. I have a cousin with MS, and I suffer from the far less debilitating LS, so I will be delighted if I can help in any way. Already go visit the 'vampires' every three months when they come to my neck of the woods. Have already taken both children along with me too in the hopes that they will see first hand that giving blood is painless and not at all unpleasant and that they will be more willing to add their names to the list when age allows. (note to the wise - don't take them on the same night if they tend to muck about! Not easy to get up and grab them when you are 'hooked up')

Can anyone tell me does the donor/Ms tissue scheme rely on next of kin contacting them at the crucial time? Not to sound too big headed but, although he is aware of and respects my decisions, I am vain enough to think he may be distraught and not remember/go for it when the crunch came.
    Regards
    Katyk

PS Now registered as promised for donor card and email sent requesting reg pack from MS Tissue
  • Great thing to remind people about! Thanks Jenny

@katiesmummy - Can I ask how you are still able to be a blood donor despite receiving blood in the past?
You should not give blood if you have received blood or think you may have received blood during the course of any medical treatment or procedure anywhere in the world since 1st January 1980.

Thanks, allthough I have always carried a very old donorcard, I feel I am now on their official list, and that is an extremely rewarding feeling for me, especially as my husband has been told he will probably need a kidney transplant at some time in the future.

Okay, this isn’t strictly MoneySaving, but it’s useful info nonetheless. If you haven’t had a chance to pick up a donor card, you can now sign up to the NHS organ donor register online.

The process only takes about three minutes, and saves you trekking down to the doc’s surgery. I only just found this out, so hope it’s of interest to others too.

Im on it already when i got my driving license.

This nurse said to me once, "dont carry a donor card because if youre fighting for your life and the doctors see you have a donor card, your organs are more important and so they wont try as much to keep you alive"

    its scared me ever since!

Thanks to the lady who mentioned the tissue donation!!!
