Hello daniel-2412
I'll move your thread to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Why not go the easier route and buy a car for the straight £2k - much cheaper. No monthly payments or interest charges on top. That's the ultimate money saving way. You could even buy yourself a luxo barge for that kind of money, air con, electric windows etc etc, big massive engine, and spend the money you'd otherwise have spent on monthly payments on petrol and insurance. You'd have a whole lot more fun and at the end of it your car can't lose any more in value than the £2k you spent on it.
But probably the best way to buy new, if you want to buy new, is to look at the new car sites on the internet and go to various dealers and try get them to compete with those prices. Can't remember any of the sites off hand but I know there's a few about, think one's called drive the deal or something.0 -
If you could only save £2000 for a deposit then really you can't afford a new car. The depreciation on anything you buy will cost a fortune. You might as well set fire to the money.
Buy yourself something 5 years old. A Merc, a BMW, Audi, VW, Rover 75, along those lines. Its far cheaper, you'll get a much better car, and you'll lose much less in depreciation.0 -
thanx for your help, my wife would like a new car because she drives alot for her work and said she doesnt feel safe in our old car and i wouldnt want her to not feel safe so i guess that would be the same for a second hand car too, the £2000 is for a deposit and would be hoping to pay upto £200 a month for a new one. but wouldnt want to spend all that if we could help it. thanks again for your help.0

Don't listen to these guys, you always get these reponses on the motoring board! People don't seem to understand that Moneysavingexpert isn't about saving as much money as possible its about doing what you want to do in life as cheap as possible! Sometimes in life it is just nice to have a new Car and the comfort that brings with a 3 year warranty etc.
Have a look at some new car brokers.
These guys are quite good and are showing discounts of over £3000 on Astras

2004 on Astra has 5* NCAP rating http://www.euroncap.com/tests/opel_vauxhall_astra_2004/185.aspx
Although I doubt there is any car that is 100% safe.
You can get a 2004 Astra for little more than you have saved up for the deposit, for example http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VAUXHALL+ASTRA/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-144-4294966635-4294966969/advert.action?R=200729291874941&distance=95&channel=CARS&make=VAUXHALL&model=ASTRA&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=as it has the highest NCAP rating you won't get any safer than that. So if it's safety you want - it's in your budget and you'd own it outright without paying £2k upwards alone on interest repayments - but if you would prefer a brand new shiney one...0 -

something not right with that advert,2004 isnt a Y reg,i think that was 2001.
for a 2004 astra you would need at least £3500 i would imagine....work permit granted!0 -

In that case have you considered leasing?
Leasing is good for anybody who want to keep renewing their vehicle every 2-3 years so they are always in new cars only upto the age of 2-3years old, and is wanting mid ranged priced cars as leasing dose not tend to be worth it for low priced or very expensive cars.
Depending on the milage the vehicle will be doing it may even be worth going for one with maintenance on so you dont need to worry about servicing and tyres aswell.0 -

I don't mean to take this off on a tangent but have you or your wife ever considered advanced driver training? The IAM offer courses from about £90.
You may think you don't need it but I've never met anybody whose driving could not benefit from the simple but valuable lessons you might learn.
The most important safety consideration of any vehicle is the driver. Some people prefer to buy a car that will keep them safe in an accident - I prefer to avoid the accident in the first place0 -
thankyou all for your help. not sure which option we will go with but you have given us something to thing about. thankyou all again.0
