How much data to clone a card?

in Credit cards
My other half and I had our joint account debit cards cancelled today as per our bank police had arrested someone with our cards and many others on them.
The cards were of course still with us, so these would be clones. But we only use our joint account for certain limited situations - not on line purchases for example. We've identified only 4 retail outlets where we would both have used our card (yes one was a petrol station but a family run one locally so pretty depressing if it is them...........) But how much info would they need to clone a card? For example, our child benefit is paid into that account......and many other direct debits go out, the details of which could presumably have been misappropriated within the organisation we are paying. Could you clone a card from that - surely you need the full card details.
We're just wondering where to avoid in future!
Hope this is a suitable place to post this - have read some earlier comments about fraud.

i have spoken to my cc fraud protection unit today about 24 transactions that took place in a 4 hour period between 10pm on sunday and 2am today (monday)for transactions on a pay as you go phone. i have nothing to do with this and have obviously been cloned. the only place i have used my card this year is a petrol station in bath, as i was working there and needed to get home and my debit card had been stopped ( a month before its end date - new card had been delivered that day and was waiting at home for me) i went to petrol station and my dd card was declined and had to pay with my cc!! i spent my lunchour in the bank clarifing the situation- all this happened at the beggining of the month and yesterday somone has made 24 10.00 transactions on my card number - this will be creditied back to my account....no one can explain how it happened but thank god i could not pay with my debit card as i have just been paid and dont think the bank would have beed as understanding..... the cc company have my mobile details and had already contacted my mobile provider to acertain that my account was still active and had been told that i never fully used my call alowance- there fore cc company believe this isnt me!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

I really wonder what does go on. I had a credit card "compromised" a few months ago - got a replacement - within 10 days that was compromised too. I was told by the credit card co I must have used it in the same place - in fact I had hardly used it at all (no time!) and there was NOWHERE that I had used the old one.
Of course, in light of that we were even more worried by what happened today, but think it is just coincidence (unless a certain very well known supermarket has had its security seriously compromised, as that is the only common place I used the original credit card and these debit cards were used there too).
Would be v interested to hear of any more experiences like sillyvixens.0 -

Just to check whether you used your card at cash machines at all? If so the information could just as easily have been cloned at one of them. This has certainly happened both me and DH in the past, although the nationwide sorted it all amazingly well and quickly
There was also an automatic assumption of innocence on our part which was great....

When you pay for things with your cards never let them walk off and watch them like a hawk with your card. If they want to take your card and walk away then follow them and watch!!!! Some scanners are now so small a very quick swipe and they have all the info. They watch you enter the pin number and they have all they need.0

Big companies CC data can be compromised. I had 6 cards compromised over 3 months last yr.. the company was a big electrical supplier (not one of the 3 most well known). I changed PCs when ordering, then resorted to telephone ordering. If they have an insider selling info out...its all too easy. They couldn't actually get the PIN like this, so making a card would be difficult, but all the false transactions were 'internet purchases'
Still can't understand why they use just a 3 digit security code.... why not have 3 random digits from 6?0 -
I've since had another card compromised. This card was not used in any of the places the first card was used. My other half and I could identify as I say only 4 places we both used our cards. None of these cards are ever used to withdraw cash. The debit cards are not used over the internet.
Do I conclude that fraud is just so rife that it is simply coincidence?0 -
Insiders selling out in the CC companies?0
