Thanks in advance...

Try ebuyer here. They have lots of socket A products. How much is your budget and what do you need to buy ?

My old Slot A athlon motherboard ist kaputt! There are suitable replacement motherboards on ebay but I thought if I'm going to spend money on it I might as well get something better.

So I want a CPU and motherboard for £50 ideally. Hoping to re-use everything else from the current system, including the RAM.

I've been trying to get on ebuyer for ages but the site isn't responding (or extremely slowly if it does). I tried a few other places and finding that although I can get a motherboard for around £20, CPUs start at over £40...
  • comdw - be aware that depending on the age of your system, your existing ram may be conventional 72 pin simms, whereas most modern boards are DDR only.

If that is the case, have a look for a board by 'PC Chips' - very cheap (about £13 new), but they do make some that have support for both DDR and 72pin. Obviously a budget board, but having used them a few times without issue, they are a good budget choice.

Ok finally got on the ebuyer page, I see they have a motherboard for about £15 and processor just over £30, so this might do.

The chips in the current system definitely aren't SIMM, I think they are PC66 or PC100 SDRAM. So as long as the motherboard doesn't insist on DDR I should be ok.

    Thanks...

Your memory will be at least PC100 DIMMS for a Slot A Athlon, they could be PC133.

Avoid PC Chips like the plague. They are truly awful.

  • I did mean DIMMS, rather than SIMMs - my mistake.

I have to disagree with the statement about PC Chips boards though, as a budget choice (and I stress that part!), I've never had any problems with them at all.

Have you already got a graphics card? I nearly bought a PC Chips motherboard and a seperate graphics card, when I realised it was much more cost effective to buy an Abit VA10 with onboard graphics. These were used with a Sempron 2300 Socket A processor. The total PC only cost £140.

I think to be on the safe side I need to get a stick of memory as well, so I'm upping the budget to £100 (delivered). Now looking at the motherboads that are around £25 on ebuyer (Abit, Asus or MSI) - any recommendations on these? Do the ones that have SATA (for future hard disk expansion) also have two IDE channels to support the old drives I have?

i've got a athlon xp1600, asus k7v mobo with 512 ddr if you're interested PM me, otherwise try ebay, there's some good cheap stuff on there, or aria's bargain basement, you should be able to get a mobo for £20, 512 megs £30 and a sempron of some form for less than £50.

From experience I would have a slight preference for Abit or MSI (Asus have a good reputation but I've seen some issues with some of their boards).

The boards will have IDE connectors as well as SATA ones.
