Visiting Canada - Can I visit US Easily?

Folks, I'm off to Toronto in a couple of weeks and will be hiring a car over there...
I'd like to go to Detroit and possibly Rochester while we are there and wondered how easy it was to go in and out of the USA. I flew into Boston in March this year and we queued for an hour or so - is it likely to be the same at Candian/US borders and I assume as long as I have US accomodation booked and can give the address I'll be ok to get in the US?
Thanks,

I did it easily enough in 2002, from Abbotsford BC to Sumas, Washington state. I believe the wait depends on the crossing you use - some are much busier than others (with massive vehicle queues literally going back miles). I imagine time of day can be critical too.
I was only on a day visit however, so accomodation was not an issue.
Since (I assume) you are British, when you actually get to the border you will be most likely invited into the office for a short interview, and get the visa waiver forms sorted.
Don't forget when you leave the US to hand your immigration form back in - or they won't know that you have left the country, and 90 days later will assume that you have overstayed your 90 day limit, causing problems when you try to enter the country next time.0 -
Just returned from Canada/USA myself and Toronto was one port of call. Drive down to Niagara Falls (about 2 hours) and cross Rainbow Bridge to Niagara Falls USA. It costs US$6 for your visa which you can apply for when you get there. It took me about 5min to be processed but i walked across.
And all this nonsense about criminal records, forget it. They can't check your criminal past if you have one. Just answer no to the relevant questions and Robert's your mothers brother.Vedra Nativa0 -
Sitting in my fiancee's apartment right now in buffalo ( about an hour and a half drive from toronto ) , posting this, i flew into toronto airport ( as it saved me a good £200 !!) and she picked me up at the airport, if you're driving i recommend arriving at about noon as the border starts to get busy at about 4pm ish, and you'll have to get processed which may take up to an hour depending on how busy it is, then you pay a $6 fee and thats it, then you can cross as many times as you like, as mentioned before, just remember to surrender the green I 94 form when you return to canada before you leave as it can cause problems if you want to re-enter in the future.
So enjoy it, it's a lovely area and i know you'll have lots to do .0 -
I've crossed from Canada in to the States at Windsor into Detroit. Largish border crossing that can get busy but no problems. Fill in your Visa Waiver Form, hand it over with your Passport and $6 and as has been said Robert is your dad's brother!!!0
