Bank charges

Hi, I have just received a letter from my bank saying they are charging me £30 for going over my overdraft limit. I only went over by £2.50 as they paid a direct debit. The company who the direct debit was for did not take it out at the correct time which is the only reason I am overdrawn. Do you think the bank will waive this fee as it is the first time that I have gone over my limit?

You can but ask. I know what you mean by a company calling for the money later than you thought. All my DD should be gone out pf my account by the 3rd of each month. I know then that any money left in my account is ALL MINE. However, sometimes a DD may be called for later than I had allowd and hey presto bank charges kick in when they are not honored.

You have good chances to have the fee refunded for your first 'blunder'. Just call them and explain everithing politely.
Cannot you apply for an agreed overdraft limit? Not for spending - just to have safety 'buffer' in future.

If the third party took the money too EARLY then it's their fault, not your bank's. So ask the third party for the fee to be refunded.

If they took it too LATE, then it's your fault for not knowing what was going to be taken and when. In which case, I refer you to grumbler's advice.

They took it 3 days later than they should and I work long hours so have been at work for a 34 hour shift so could not check to see if it had come out so I just presumed it had. Will contact my bank to see if they can remove charge as I am normally really careful not to go over.

I have phoned the bank and they have taken the charge off my account and I have also contacted the company who the direct debit was for. I just want to say thank you really to everyone on this forum as before I starting coming on here I would not have dreamed of phoning up to ask for the charge to be removed. I have also had success on getting a better credit card deal with 0% balance transfer for 12 months and a lower apr in general than my current one all because I dared to ask. Thank you all so much.

As the charge has already been refunded, I doubt it, pin.

Thanks for the thanks, loz! And well done for coming on and asking - answering gives us something to do! :)
