Want A Tax Rebate, Lacking Info...

Hi there, great site.

I left my job of 6 months at the end of last year, being unemployed I'd like to get a rebate.

I don't intend to work or claim benefits anytime before april so I got a P50 about 2 months ago, haven't sent it in yet.

Because - I can only remember one period of work that lasted a couple of months that I had a tax code, every other job I've had the Code has been BR, since I was 16. (26)

I only have a P45 for my last job but of course I'd like to claim back what must be several thousands of pounds tax I overpaid, but like I say no P45s, P60s, or payslips... or a decent enough memory to remember where I worked at what time. always had temp jobs, must have had 20+ different employers since I left school - and i mean different agencies, not just the places i work.

Lots of periods of claiming benefits and lots of periods when i was not working or claiming benefit.

So what I'd like to know is if it is still somehow possible for me to claim back all the tax I'm owed from the past 6 years?

all help very much appreciated!

You will have to do what I have just had to do to see if you are owed any rebate. I was told to send a covering letter just saying....
"I am writing to request that checks be made to see if I am entitled to any tax rebate as I believed I have overpaid"

I think you will struggle with this claim as you said you don't remember where you worked and at what time because and you have to list every single period of work and unemployment for the time you wish to be checked. You mustn't miss out any dates at all. You have to list the wages or benefits aswell.

    For example...

    1st April 2007 - 1st July 2007 Unemployed receiving JSA at a rate of £50 per week.
2nd July 2007- 1st October 2007 Unemployed receiving no income at all.
    2nd October 07- 1st February 08 Working- receiving £150 gross per week.

Also what you have to think about is signing on, even if you don't wish to claim JSA as signing on each fortnight will make sure your NI is getting credited for claiming benefits in the future should you need to.

Edit to add~ Failing that give them a call to see if its worth you trying to put everything onto paper. They have been friendly and helpful to me everytime Iv'e had to call them.

At the end of the day HMRC should have all your figures.

I agree with shelly ~ send a letter outlining what you can and ask them to look into your rebate.

I've found a couple of P45s now and a few payslips.

Am I entitled to get old payslips (To check wages) from previous employers or will they only do so if they feel like it?

I can pretty much remember all of the places I've worked now after checking a few dates, asking friends I worked with etc and I've sent several emails to places asking for the exact dates I worked there.

Will go to the jobcentre tomorrow and ask them the exact dates I've signed on and off, I don't see why they shouldn't have all the info.

    cheers

HMRC "may" have your work details depending on whether either you or your employers told them you had been employed.

If there are any gaps in your employment history record with HMRC then they will send you a P91 http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/p91_bs5_02.pdf to complete listing all your periods of employment and unemployment in chronological order. You would be expected to provide P45's or P60's for any employment they don't have details of, HMRC expect everyone to hold onto both for 6 years anyhow

If you are missing P45's then you can request "statement of earnings" from your previous employers. The Job centre can also give you details of how much taxable benefits you received in the past 6 tax years.
