Hello All
Bit of advice I’m after really – hoping somebody can help silly me. I’m going to register with a few recruitment agencies to try and get some Saturday work for two Saturdays max a month. Do I need to inform Inland Revenue so they can adjust my tax code, or will this be done for me automatically?
Also does anyone know if I take on a Saturday job will my wages go down in my full time job? Or will working two Saturdays a month not affect it?
Sorry this probably makes me look very dumb, just not very clued up on Inland Revenue Tax etc.
Thank you for your help!!

I'm not sure what the second part of your question means, are you asking if your pay for your main job will decrease by taking on another additional job?
If you mean will you be taxed more then yes but you're taxed on the overall amount earned in both jobs.0 -
Thanks for your answer D4WNO.
Yes I'm trying to find out if my pay for the main job will decrease because of an additional job. Sometimes people have said no point doing 2nd jobs because the tax man takes most of it - is that correct?
Also - do I need to inform anybody if i get a 2nd job, or will my tax automatically adjust?
Thanks for your help!0 -
Hi,
As far as I know, you won't get any less for your main job, or taxed any more, but you will get A LOT of tax on your second job.
Your new employers (the agency) will get you to fill in a form (P45) and you'll have to tick the 'I have another job' box. The agency will then send that off for you.
At least this is how it worked with me

In my opinion going through an agency for a second job is not a good idea! Chances of getting a job 2 days a month are pretty slim. Agencies rates tend to be less hourly than if you find a job for yourself! You will get taxed on a week 1 rate or at BR. The following list gives a list of rates.
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/employers/rates_and_limits.htm#1a
The best thing is possibly to see if you can find a job working from home, where you are your own boss.
It will allways seem as though you are getting taxed more on a second job (22%)
Can you not get your wages topped up by tax credits?0 -

the form is P46.
what you can do ( i know as my wife did it until sept last year, and my eldest daughter also has done it), ie they both had 2 jobs,
you can contact the inland revenue and get your tax code split between the two jobs, if you dont then the second job will have tax deducted at the 22% rate.
if you job earns less than 5425 (this years tax allowance - not sure of exact figure), then you pay tax at 10% for what you earn above that up to approx 11000, so if your job 1 pays less than 11000, it woul dbe worth you moving 500/1000 from your tax code over to the second job, at least then you wont get taxed on the second job
if in doubt have a look at the inland revenue websitesmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

One area of saving as far as cash in your pocket/bank account is concerned is that your NI contributions on your second job will be calculated on that pay - and so will be less proportionately than for your full-time one.0

There would only be any point in doing this if you earned less than £7455 in the 1st job. If you earn more than £7455 you are due to pay tax at 22% anyway.if you job earns less than 5425 (this years tax allowance - not sure of exact figure), then you pay tax at 10% for what you earn above that up to approx 11000, so if your job 1 pays less than 11000, it woul dbe worth you moving 500/1000 from your tax code over to the second job, at least then you wont get taxed on the second job
I have no idea where you get £11,000 as the ceiling for 10% tax. For this tax year it's £5225(personal allowance) plus £2230(10% band) so ceiling is £7455.
As from April 6th 10% band is abolished so everything over £5435 will be taxed at 20%.
As for the original question, you will get more money if you have 2 jobs. It's all down to total income rather than how many jobs. One job paying £18,000 and 2 jobs paying £15,000 and £3,000 will pay exactly the same amount of cash in the end.
As LittleVoice says the saving with having 2 jobs is in your NI contributions because you get two sets of allowances, unlike tax.0 -
sorry got my figs mixed up, i had forgotton about the 10% being dropped form april
i stands correctedsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....
