I apologise if this has come up before -
My 18 year old daughter is buying her first digital camera, I have a fairly old one and can advise a little but the array of new ones as just too much to take in. Can anyone recommend an on-line site to help her choose? She wants to spend around £250.00.

I have a sony with a Carl Ziess lens. I find it really easy to use and it takes a great picture.

Get her to look at the Canon Ixus 50. I bet she'll love it.
And enough money left to get some extra memory too.0 -
Hi I will list a few sites worth having a look at for good unbiased reviews. The array of cameras can be bewildering, what I suggest is doing a spread sheet that covers the main attributes your daughter wants include prices and a column for users feedback. This way you can narrow the choice down fairly easily. Also using pricerunner's compare section might help.
Review sites:- I have ranked them In the order I found most useful...1 and 2 are on a par.
http://www.dpreview.com/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/
http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/
http://www.dcresource.com/
http://www.imaging-resource.com/
Places worth buying from include:-
http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/shop/refurb/ (end of line Fujis excellent and good value)
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet (end of line Canons read instructions carefully, I have bought many on here; but research the correct prices from past auctions prior to bidding). An A85 will cost just over £100 a super deal.
Questions she needs to ask:-
What sort of camera compact or SLR type?
Number of pixels? (doesn't really matter if only printing off postcard size prints)
Zoom? (Remember digital zoom can be done on PC and is therefore fairly irrelevant concentrate on optical zoom.)
How close do you want to be able to focus (ie flowers etc)?
User reviews are also important but need to be treated with caution, look for specific complaints and decide whether they are relevant to you.
For £250 she will get a lot of camera!!0 -
Fantastic amount of work, thank you, from both of us.0

Indeedy, my boss got the Ixus 50 and i got the 40 (he gets paid more than i do) and they're cracking cameras. Both bought them for the size aspect - fit perfectly into a cig packet (20's).0 -

They're part of Dixons - nuff said!
Hintza recommendations are spot on - £250 will go a long way these days - also don't forget the extras.
Online retailers - Pixmania - carefull - grey imports and sometime instructions in other languages
the digital camera company - excellent - with a 2 year guarantee that works - i used it
don't forget John Lewis and Jessops - they'll also price match depending on the mood of the salesperson.
It's important to get the camera your daughter likes, it's pointless me recommending a Canon 350D because I like it, if she likes an IXUS. you generally won't go wrong with well known brands.0
