Motability grants

I've put this here as, whilst it's not exactly a benefit, I think there are probably more here who understand the system than on other boards.
We're coming up on a Motability renewal - this agreement finishes mid June, so really need to put in the order for the car within the next few weeks as it's on a long waiting list from the dealers anyway.
Husband just rang Motability grants, after having been told last week that it was an instant, on the phone, decision, only to be told that in fact it was still a paper form with an 8-12 week wait for the decision.
Now, I know that in terms of our current agreement, it will just be extended to cover any gap, but I wondered if this 8-12 weeks wait was a true representation, or whether the reality is different at all.
Has anyone gone for a grant this way recently? What are current experiences? And does anyone know roughly what the payments requested of us are, as I know it's not just the fixed sum it used to be.
