Hi
Were thinking of going skiing around October this year, were first time skiiers and going to get lessons beforehand!
Any advice/tips - or places to go for first timers?
Thanks in advance!

I doubt you will find anywhere that has snow in october, places like finland that have lots of snow don't usually get any until early December. I would recommend you go anytime from jan to march and also weigh up the costs of doing a learn to ski package when you get there rather than doing lessons now, for example, learn to ski 5 day package with ski companies such as crystal and inghams is about £150 each (that's for finland)0

October is a wee bit early for mainstream skiing in Europe.
There are areas which offer Glacier skiing virtually all year round, but you might need a helicopter (or a mortgage!)
Southern hemisphere destinations might still be OK - South Island of New Zealand for example
Canadian resorts start opening in November in a good year.
Les Deux Alps in France (Isere etc), Saas Fee (Switzerland) might have a bit, but it's equally likely that you might find it's still 'summer' in a bad year!!
OCTOBER REALLY IS TOO EARLY IN EUROPE. MID NOVEMBER IS OK IN A GOOD YEAR.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
I'm moving to a ski resort in Canada and this winter the ski slopes didn't really get going until just before Christmas! Every year it seems to be later and later.:smileyhea "here, hare, here" :smileyhea0

The ChillFactore (https://www.chillfactore.com/flash.asp) in Manchester is a few hundred yards from the Trafford Centre. I think a week there in October would be great!!0

I was in Banff and although some runs were open in late November there was only one good snowfall between then and mid January and a lot of it had melted by then.:smileyhea "here, hare, here" :smileyhea0 -
Comments have been very useful cos I've just come back from my first skiing holiday and have got the bug - wondered if I could go somewhere at October half term but clearly I will have to wait!

Hi there.
Just stumbled on this post while searching for skiing in October.
There seem to be a few places you can ski in oct. Glacial skiing is pretty much year-round
We went to Austria a few years ago and spent some time on the kitzsteinhorn, which is apparently open most of the year.
This October we're looking at going to Saas Fee in switzerland. They have a ski test event kicking off on the 3rd October. The prices are pretty good, starting from around £250 for 4 days for Bed & Breakfast with a 3 day lift pass thrown in and hire of the test skis. Not sure about boots though. We've got flights out to Geneva on the 2nd Oct and they work out around £62 each. Transfers seem quite dear so I think we'll rent a car for the 4 days
Hope this helps0
