Council housing, Which areas are easy to get one ?

Just wondered if it was nationwide that people cant get council housing? My friend who im trying to help would be happy in a council house, as privately renting has made her move a few times, due to not renewing tenencys etc.

In Essex its impossible to get council places, well thats what it seems.,In the whole of the UK is there anywhere where you can get housing quite easy? this is really interesting me!! Thanks.

Sorry but I don't know the answer to your question but wondered if Housing Association houses were any easier. It is a nightmare to get rented, from a private landlord, where the agent says long term but to be given notice after six months.

If you don't mind where you live in the north east there are council properties sat empty in some areas, just many don't 'choose' to live there.

If they have lived in another area or have family connections they could put their name down in those places and have a degree of priority. Having said that it depends on the Local Authority as they will have their own rules about allocation. Check different websites and make enquiries.

I seen that on TV about Glasgow, Colin & Justin (the designers) were brought in to lift the area & make it more attractive to people.
  • I know where I am in Essex (laindon) you have to be nominated by the council to get a HA place.

I may be wrong, but I thought most HA houses are filled from the council waiting list now?

You certainly can't go direct to the HAs here any more.

I don't know if this is nationwide or not (we are in a rural area) but there seems to be less demand for houses out 'in the sticks'. This is especially true of they don't have gas heating and the bus service is a joke. If your friend drives then this may be worth thinking about.
