Gold Crown

If it costs about £600 for a private dentist to fit a gold crown these days, with the soaring price of gold, how much do you think it will cost in 10 years time ?

Also if you ever have a tooth with a gold crown extracted is it worth getting the gold recovered for its asset value ?

Is this your latest investment idea?

Get all your teeth knocked out and replace them with gold and retire on the proceeds in a few years?

Not sure if it is worth it wandering about with big gaps in your mouth and these days dentists charge a fortune even for dentures.

The Nazis in Germany made a mint extracting all the gold from the exterminated Jews.

Anyway I suspect gold crowns wil cost something like £5000 a time in about 10 years time.

It doesn't always cost 600 Quid. Depends where you go. With me it's just over 300, and I'm not the cheapest round my way.

The actual gold value in a gold crown is about 20-40 quid depending on how big the crown is, and which gold alloy is used. That's the gold price the labs charge.

The scrap gold value will be a bit lower.

If you have a gold crown removed, or the tooth with a gold restoration on taken out, then I think you are entitled to keep it, as it's yours. I say 'I think' as technically, especially if it's on an extracted tooth, it is 'clinical waste' and there are very tight regulations on the disposal of clinical waste.

Having said that, I always ask my patients if they want their crowns if I remove one - but people generally don't.

Every couple of years, a dental 'scrap man' pops in and gives me a wad of money (About 90 - 150 depending on how much I've got) for my pot of crowns. And he gives me a proper waste transfer note!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

a friend just took her old crown (shiny gold one) to the dentist to try to get it refitted but was advised that it would not mould again...she was asked whether she wanted to keep the old crown and foolishly said "no thanks". I told her that as gold was a soft metal she should have kept it as it may be of more value than my RBS share certificate! Fool's gold.........
