EUjet suspended flight from Manston

Just heard on tv that EU have suspended flights from Manston airport. We are due to fly and insurance company have just told us we not covered if the company has gone bust! (travelinsuranceweb, found on this site) Looked on EU site and can't find anything that says if they are ABTA. Does anyone know if we will be covered for a refund. We are so disappointed. Off to see friends and godson, we had a really tough year and were looking forward to a break, (just like everyone else affected).

I think, that as they are an airline rather than a travel agent they won't be covered by ABTA. Do you have scheduled airline failure insurance on your travel insurance as I though that it is what you need to claim for airline tickets when the comany closes.

Not sure about refunds, it probably depends on what is happening with the company, can you get through to their call centre (I assume they have one) to try and find out more.

    Sorry I can't help further.

  • Been to the airport and they told us we not covered under ABTA or ATOL because they are an Irish company. We paid on debit card so no help there! Travel insurance will not pay out because the company has gone bust. WHAT is the point of insurance  Should never assume anything I suppose, but thought bankruptcy would be covered. At the end of the day there is worse things happening in the world and all we lost is a few hundred pounds.
  • Hi

Yes I heard about that on the news that because they are an Irish Company the credit card companies may not refund people either.

Hope you manage to get your money back some how, we were going to book some flights, glad we didn't now.

Thanks to the Holiday-Truths web-site for this :-

What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?
  • Thanks Jules, we just seen that too. Not sure if it will apply cos we paid with debit card. So many people affected, we know of three families who were due to use it. Our friends managed to get flights tonight from Luton but it cost them £600 as well as the £200 they already paid EUjet. I can't believe that there are no contingency plans to get stranded people home though, Easyjet seem to have come up trumps, still lots of money for large families though.

Travel insurance is notorious for inconsistency in the level of cover provided for various problems.
But in a way you already paid your insurance by getting such cheap flights in the first place. After all with the low costs you always take those kind of risks.
  • wolvoman, we have lost £308 for 5 flights to Ireland. WAs I have said previously there are worst things happening in the world so this is not that important. These flights were actualy MORE expensive than flying from London, but we wanted to go from our local airport. Your last comment is rather negative and not very helpful. My original question was asking if anyone knew about refund issues.

I really don't want to be "I told you so" but when EU Jet started up I put a comment on the "old forum" to say I doubted wether they'd still be in business after a year - I couldn't see how the "Business Plan could work! I have great sympathy for all of those affected. Many people have saved long and hard for their holidays and then this happens. All I would add is that this is likely to happen again soon to other Carriers - so be warned. Easyjet and Ryanair are the market leaders in budget travel, and I would recommend people stick wth them - but even then there's no guarantee. All of course IMVHO
