Cannot install McAfee

Options
Hi
I have just reinstalled Windows XP into my 5 year old Dell Dimension because of problems that accumulated and I couldnt fix. The reinstall seems to have resolved the old problems and am now able to install and run my printer etc which I have not been able to do for some weeks. However I cannot reinstall McAfee internet security suite 2007 either from the CD or the McAfee site, it goes through the motions but after a few minutes have a cross in each box and nothing installed.
I am wondering if there's something in the Dell reinstall that I have missed to have caused this?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

I can't help you with the problem I'm afraid, but I'm wondering if you have any anti virus protection at all to come onto the forum and post your problem! If you haven't then try going to AVG for a free download of a perfectly good AV. I've given up with others which I had problems with and now my OH and I have both used AVG on both our PCs. Here's the link and when you go on the free download you need is the one on the far right. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

You get regular daily updates and I can't fault it. Meanwhile this will give you time and the protection to then go to Dell or/and McAffee sites and get any help they can give so that you can then install your McAffee.

    Good luck, Sue.

As Sue-UU has said just use one of the free ones, AVG or Avast, perfectly good, i think you'll find most people on here use one of these two.

    Hi Sue
    Thank you for your reply.
Over the past hour or so I have been clicking away at this that and the other, trying to reinstall McAfee and a message came up on screen saying that I needed Microsoft.net framework 1.1 to run McAfee. As mentioned in my 1st post I have just reinstalled Windows XP so can only suppose that I have not installed all of the necessary drivers needed however have in the past few minutes downloaded Microsoft.net framework 1.1 and as a result McAfee has now installed and running OK. I have put the site you recommended in to my favourites and when my McAfee subscription expires in about 7 months will look at using your recommendation as McAfee is a bit of a pain with its constant updates just after logging on and slowing everything down.
Thanks for taking the time to reply, your help is appreciated.
    Cheers

You're most welcome Jeff. To be honest we never had any luck with McAffee so, I'd definately give it 'the order of the boot' ;) when it expires! SO many people are using either AVG or Avast (as boatman rightly says above) now and both are free and do what they're made for.

Thanks for getting back and I'm so pleased it was successful.

Jeff - ensure you have applied all MS Updates http://www.update.microsoft.com/

Select the Custom button then look over on the left of the results screen/page after the scan for "Optional" and " Hardware" updates.
You will need to keep doing these updates till none of the "High-priority" updates appear. You will see MS are now in Ver 3 of Framework.net .....

Can I ask why you're waiting? You'll lose nothing financially by getting rid of McAfee now and installing AVG or Avast or Antivir and you'll benefit from better virus detection, less problems and fewer resources being hogged. Sticking with McAfee for no other reason than to "use up" your subscription seems a bit masochistic.

  • As already mentioned, you must do two things immediately.

    1. Install a working AV (I use AVG)
    2. Install all the Windows Critical Updates

Without doing the above, your PC is VERY VULNERABLE to attack.

Also install a decent free Firewall (Comodo, Zonealarm etc), and disable the useless Windows XP Firewall.
